Firefox Becomes The First Third-Party Program On Google's Homepage

Google is really trying to put the beating on Internet Explorer by advertising Firefox on the Google homepage. This is the first time that Google has ever promoted a third-party program on their homepage. Also, you will only see the advertisement if you are using Internet Explorer and you are located in the United States.

Ever since Google started to support Firefox I was wondering when they were going to start and push users to switch to Firefox. This will definitely get Firefox some more publicity…and I wonder how many people will download Firefox each day from this subtle promotion? Any ideas? Keep in mind that that Google’s homepage gets approximately 91 million page views in one day.

What does it mean for a web page to “support Firefox”? I know Google gave some money to the Firefox project, but it’s a web page - and a deceptively simple one, at that. It should work on any browser from lynx through mosaic and straight on up.

I would say that by putting a link on their homepage to download Firefox is a good representation of supporting a company, especially since only their own products have been on the homepage.

Also, Google allows web site publishers to put links on their pages to download Firefox, and for every person you get to install Firefox from that link they give you $1.00. This may not seem like much but I would definitely consider it a sign of support.

Funny, because if you are a website publisher like myself, it is against their AdSense policy to have the “Install Firefox with Google Toolbar” only display for people with MSIE browsers.

Having Firefox on Google’s homepage is HUGE.
