Just two days ago I saw this message in the Mozilla forums that everyone using Firefox 2.0 better export their bookmarks because the Places was going to be stripped from the builds. Ben Goodger had posted instructions on how to export your bookmarks so that you wouldn’t lose them:
- Start Firefox
- Open the Places Organizer using Bookmarks->Organize Bookmarks…
- Choose File->Export and choose a file to save to
- Open your profile folder and back up your existing bookmarks.html file
- Replace the bookmarks.html file there with the one you exported.
You should do this just before upgrading to a build that has Places
disabled, if you plan on adding any bookmarks between now and then.
Places was supposed to be one of the most hyped features of Firefox 2. People are now saying that this release should be called Firefox 1.6 because it will contain nothing more than some performance enhancements and visual changes (which are normally classified as a minor update). Even with Places removed I am still excited for Firefox 2.0 and I can’t wait for Alpha 2 to get released on May 9.
If you want to keep up on the latest news for the Firefox builds then watch the forums.
