I was recently using Firefox and came across another site that I couldn’t store my password for. I got a little frustrated and said to myself “there has to be a way to fix that”. So I then started to search Google for ways to force Firefox to remember my passwords on more sites.
I finally came across a bookmarklet that would remove the autocomplete=”off” from the form fields on the page. It worked on all of the sites that I wanted it to, my bank account, email accounts, etc…! It was so great that I thought I better share with you the 10 second process of setting this up (without needing to install an extension to do it).
- Bookmark this link: Password Saver. To bookmark the link just right-click on it and select “Bookmark This Link…”.
- The next time you find a site that won’t remember your password just click on the bookmark. It will then remove all instances of autocomplete=”off”.
- Type your username and password into the site and press submit.
- That’s all! You should now be prompted to let Firefox remember your password.
Unfortunately this does not work on every site, but it has worked on all that I have tried. The most popular sites that this is used for are Hotmail and Yahoo. This one definitely earns its place in my bookmark toolbar.

Works great on Firefox! I never liked websites telling me what was safe and what was not. I am the only person who has access to my computer, so there is no reason to not have my browser remember my passwords.
I would love a Safari one as well.
I’m trying to use this tip, especially for Yahoo. I guess I’m stuck at your instruction #1 !!. It says to “Bookmark this link”. How does one bookmark a link? I know how to bookmark a page, but doing that to this cybernetnews page does nothing for me. And when I click on the link “Password Saver” in your #1 line, all it does is give me a popup like you show at top. Can’t seem to find the correct thing I am supposed to be bookmarking. HELP a computer dummy, please.

Yes, No Script would definitely cause problems since this needs javascript in order to run. Sorry I forgot to mention that.

Looking at the code on that page reveals that this trick will not work. It only works for certain sites.

It’s not a link, you need to right-click on it and create a bookmark from it.

No problem. I believe there is also a Greasemonkey script that does the same thing and requires even less thought, but for the few times I need to use it I find this bookmarklet to be perfect.

That must be a quirk of the website, and there’s nothing you can do to make Firefox recognize it.
Seriously, is this safe? Can someone illustrate to me the code, so I know this is not sending my passwords to somewhere I don’t want them to be?!
This is completely safe. Certain sites, such as banks, just want to block users from storing passwords in case their computer is stolen, or someone gets unauthorized access to it. As long as you feel comfortable storing the password it is okay.

Maybe it’s got to do with Javascript.
No, it won’t work with that. It looks like they took some additional steps to make it difficult for the browser to remember the password.
Ryan, so what can we do for that mydouglas.douglas.bc.ca site?
You would probably have to use a specialized form filler (like RoboForm) for it to work, and even still I’m not sure if they’ll be able to pick up on it.
Finally, worked like a charm on Verizon, who chg’d their webpage over a year ago to make their customer experience more miserable, incredibly, I didn’t think it could get much worse…
…and by the way, Safari absolutely sucks. Use firefox.
