Flickr Geotagging

It looks like Flickr is now entering Zooomr’s area of expertise: Geotagging. Now I’m not big on uploading my photos to the Web yet because I want the ability to order my pictures in a folder-like structure. However, I have used the services from both Flickr and Zooomr but it is tough to say which one is better.

I’d have to give the edge to Zooomr simply because they use Google Maps which is more powerful in my opinion. Flickr, of course, didn’t have that option and they had to use Yahoo Maps because Yahoo owns them. I don’t have any experience with the API’s but I think Google’s is a little nicer. I am merely going off of the fact that there have been hundreds of different sites that use Google Maps in different ways but I don’t think I have seen any that use Yahoo Maps…until now.

If you want more details on the good and bad of the Flickr geotagging then checkout the review that Thomas Hawk wrote. I was very impressed with the professionalism that he used throughout the review considering he is the Chief Evangelist of Zooomr. That makes me love Zooomr even more knowing that they can accurately review their competitor’s strengths and weaknesses. I’m not too confident that Flickr would do the same for them.

Yes, Google Maps API is much more nice, that’s why most of the people is using it.

We know it because we are using it in our project, Panoramio.com, a community of geolocated photos mapped with a drag and drop interface in Google Maps. You also can watch the photos in Google Earth (KMl feed):

We have been working hard on it. Hope you like it ;)

I have never used a photo uploading service like Flickr or Zooomr. Maybe I should check them out some time.

I’ve never used them either - if I want to share some pictures I have my own website and it means I have total control over comments and the like.

I do like Picasa Web, mainly because it’s restricted to those who I send a link to, and it integrates perfectly with the tool I use for all my photos.

I’m hoping that Picasa is getting close to releasing a sub-albums feature since the latest version of Picasa now supports sub-albums. *crossing my fingers*

Speaking about “geotagging”: do you know locr?

locr offers the ideal solution and makes geotagging exceptionally easy. locr uses GoogleMaps with detailed maps and high-resolution satellite images. To geotag your photos just enter address, let locr search, fine-tune the marker, accept position, and done! If you don’t know the exact address simply use drag&drop to set the position.

For automatic geotagging you need a datalog GPS receiver in additon to your digital camera. The GPS receiver data and the digital camera data is then automatically linked together by the locr software. All information will be written into the EXIF header.

Use the “Show in Google Earth” button to view your photos in Google Earth.

With locr you can upload photos with GPS information in them without any further settings. In the standard view, locr shows the photo itself, plus the place it was taken. If you want to know more about the place where the photo was taken, just have at look at the Wikipedia articles which are also automatically assigned to the picture.

    Have a look at http://www.locr.com.
