It looks like Google Spreadsheets is getting updated yet again. This time the list of new features is a little bit longer but I think they are still lagging behind Zoho. With how frequently Google has been updating the spreadsheets it shouldn’t be long before they catch up. Here are a few of the new features:
- You can now share a spreadsheet using a private URL. The URL will be available once you have enabled the “Anyone can View” option.
- Easily share your spreadsheet with people on your Google contacts list. As soon as you start to type their name it will auto-complete it for you.
- Save a spreadsheet as a PDF.
- Save a spreadsheet as ODF (Open Document Format). Great for those people using OpenOffice.org Calc.
- Multi-line text in cells by using the Alt-Enter or Ctrl-Enter key combination.
- Up to 1MB file sizes now supported. Many of my spreadsheets still can’t be used because of the 50,000 cell limit. Zoho isn’t plagued with that problem.
- Improved function selector makes it easier to find the help pages for a specific formula.
I am very impressed with the dedication that Google puts into frequently updating their products. However, I think they still have a lot of work to do before I am able to use the Google Spreadsheets on a more frequent basis. It is cool at first but after you use it for a little while you’ll start to notice the limitation that the Web puts on it.
Zoho also has its limitations but from my experiences they have been much better. I don’t use either service all that much but if I had to choose between the two I would say Zoho still wears the crown.
Hopefully Google gets the chart feature in there soon.

I have yet to try out the google spreadsheets.
I wouldn’t say it is worth trying at this point. If you are a Microsoft Office or OpenOffice.org user you will be greatly disappointed with the features that it lacks.
The only time I could see it being truly beneficial is when you need to collaborate on a document with someone.

I just want to let you know that I added Google Spreadsheet import capabilities to my Firefox extension DataAnalytics. It allows the user to manipulate the data and make charts. Right now it’s pretty limited and rather hard to do, but that will change in the future. If you have time to review it I would like to know your opinion. Thanks.
