We all know Windows Vista is going to be coming out early next year but if you, or someone you know, is still stuck in the days of Windows 98 then this deal can’t be beat. I found that you can get the Windows XP Home Edition SP2 (Upgrade Version) for just $10 from Office Depot online. Shipping is free but $70 of the savings is a mail-in rebate.
If you are still interested here is how you go about getting it:
- Go to the Windows XP Home product page at Office Depot.
- Add the item to your cart.
- Continue Checkout.
- On the page where you enter in your shipping information it shows your shopping cart, there you should see a red “Coupon” button. Click it and enter in the code 25828894.
- That’s it, complete the rest of the checkout process.
- Print off the $70 rebate form to mail-in after you have received your purchase.
The rebate is valid on purchases until 9/16/2006 and the coupon code is valid until 9/15/2006, so you don’t have too much time to think about it.

This would be even better if it was an instant rebate.
I still have a hard time understanding why companies are still using the archaic rebate system. They should just offer instant rebates as it seems to me it would cut costs for the companies because they have to staff people to handle the rebate process.
Now, $70.00 is enough to get me to go through the rebate process. However, I usually will not touch one for anything under $30.00. To me it is just not worth my time and hassle, especially the times when you send all required information in and they send back saying something is missing. Then they want you to provide something you do not have because you sent it in.
It would be interesting to know what other people’s limits are for sending in a rebate.
I don’t really even bother with the mail in ones. Heck I don’t even mail anything anymore. I had times that it takes longer than they say and I finally call and am told it will be arriving shortly. I wonder then if I hadn’t called would I had even seen my rebate.
Because the amount of people that actaully clip the UPC off of the box, fill out an envelope, and throw in the recipe is small. Yes, ther are people who send it in, but use words like “Send in 3 things, wait 9 - 11 weeks” and people will just eat the potential savings for the hassle. But like you said, $70 might be smethign you’d send in for. But most people already have XP by now, have 2000 and will stick with it, or are using a pirated version of either.
I would have to say that my minimum requirement is $20 to make it worth the hassle. There are some companies that I will never ever deal with rebates such as Tiger Direct because I have gotten screwed a few times on rebates from them.
I knew that I was forgetting one main reason that they still do it.
