Foxit Reader 2.0 has been released and it is just as great as the previous versions. If you are still stuck in the days of viewing PDF’s using Adobe Acrobat then it must be because you have never tried the free Foxit Reader.
The software is amazing from multiple aspects. Of course the most important feature that it has is the amazingly quick startup time. When I open a PDF it is on my screen for me to read in less than 5-seconds. Can’t beat that!
The second best thing is that you never have to install it. Just download the ZIP file, extract it, and run the EXE. I just drag the file into my Program Files folder and set it up to be my default PDF reader. There is no installation which means no mess!
So if you haven’t tried this PDF reader yet then I highly suggest you give it a whirl. There’s nothing to install so the worst thing that would happen is you download it, try it, and delete it. However, I have never come across someone that doesn’t like it.

You make it sound so amazing that I am just going to have to try it tonight when I get home!
Believe me, it is really that great. Those developers over at Foxit really have their heads screwed on straight.
I agree, it is great. And yet, I had a reason for drop it. I had some PDF files, I think from Disney.com, where the PDF files were with forms (?), meaning you could complete the invitation (for kids party) writing directly in PDF than print. While Foxit could not handle this, the clasic Acrobat Reader (just Reader) allowed me to write text in those Disney’s PDF files.
Maybe this 2.0 solved the problem? Anyway, Foxit is great, I confirm this. And I will retest it. I use PDF files alot.
It is pretty awesome. I haven’t had a problem yet and it’s super fast. If you’re needing to open PDF files frequently it’s a “must have.”
I just down loaded it and tried the reader on a PDF file the was a form type and I was able to check off items and add input. But this required an additional 1M download of java script.
Wow fantastic, beats Acrobat by miles in speed !

FoxIt has some issues with certain PDF files… Here’s an article that teaches you Speed up PDF Loading with Acrobat
Hope it helps someone!
Thanks for the heads-up on the upgrade, Ryan. I’ve been using Foxit for a while. Foxit is fast & leaves more room on the computer too.
No problem Ed. This is one piece of software that I watch like a hawk.
Is this the one that I found dialing out onto the Internet all by itself? That made me nervous and so I uninstalled it.
Works beautifully when paired in Firefox with the PDF Download Extension.
I’ve never noticed that happening before. I’ll watch it a little closer but this program has a very good reputation, so I don’t think they would do anything to tarnish it.
I haven’t used that extension before but I have heard great things about it. Maybe it is about time I give it a shot.
Take a look at my blog article: Adobe Acrobat vs Foxit Reader for instructions on how to get it setup.
I downloaded it but have not yet tried it out.
Ryan…The PDF Download Extension also work great with the Download Statusbar extension. Since PDF Downloads a copy of the PDF file to display it in either Acrobat, Foxit or whatever PDF Reader you are using. When I am done viewing the file, just right-click on it in the download stautsbar and select ‘Delete From System’.
I use Download Statusbar and your instructions seem pretty clear-cut so I think I’ll give it a go. Thanks!
Wow, I had heard how much faster Foxit was than Acrobat Reader, but this is ridiculous. With all the money that Adobe can throw at what may be their most omnipresent proprietary format, why is their reader so inferior? Foxit FTW.
And as readers above have mentioned, the firefox PDF Download extension is a must have. Firefox still seems to have a problem unloading the acrobat plugin from memory until you close the entire program, so it’s nice to have the option to open it in an external viewer, especially Foxit.
I tried out Foxit over a year ago, v1.3 I think.
I timed it opening a very large map, and compared to Adobe reader 5.
Foxit was quite a bit slower than Adobe. Also, with this map, the display was not as nice a Adobe.
However, I will be trying Foxit 2.0, hope it’s good.
Adobe installs processes that run on system startup and can be quite slow to load inside Firefox. Foxit loads within about a second despite not being preloaded and despite the fact that it has to get the entire .pdf before it opens it stops you having to wait between pages whilst each downloads. Great little program.
AMAZING!!! IT IS INCREDIBLE!!!
Simple FOXIT vs ADOBE test:
1. Get any PDF file, which is long enough (300 pages, for example), with many pictures inside.
2. Load this file in both ADOBE and FOXIT readers.
3. Start “Task Manager”, and switch to “Processes” tab.
ADOBE is “AcroRd32.exe”,
FOXIT is “FoxitReader.exe”.
4. NOW START DRAGGING SCROLLBAR quickly all way down and all way up multiple times IN ADOBE READER, WHILE WATCHING ITS “Memory Usage” IN “Task Manager”.
5. DO THE SAME FOR FOXIT READER.
6. Compare results!!!!!
For me, they both was eating 4 MB RAM, while showing the first file’s page.
But after “scrollbar dragging memory eating race”, I got amazing results:
ADOBE READER = 250 MB (!!!!!)
FOXIT READER = 24 MB
Incredible!!!!!
very nice software the size of it is so great i liked it more than Acrobat Reader.
That’s a great story Dee. I never heard of anyone having a problem like that with Adobe, but you’ll be much happier with Foxit anyway.
