No More Digg Submissions From CyberNet

October 8th, 2006
19 Comments Written by Ashley

Between yesterday and today, we’ve gotten several emails from some of you wondering why you were receiving an error when trying to submit articles from CyberNet to Digg. We contacted Digg in regards to the error and received this response:

When submitted stories are consistently reported as spam and users complain via our feedback email about submission spam, we ban the domain. The domain will not be unbanned. The domain would consistently get reported as spam otherwise.

As a result, we’ve removed the Digg button that was on the top of each article. We know a lot of our readers are also Digg users and felt it was necessary to give a quick explanation.  This posting in no way is meant to criticize Digg. Unfortunately there are a good chunk of people on Digg who do not value the quality news that can come from all of the many weblogs out there today. So, a quick thanks to all those who have submitted our articles, particularly “curtissthompson”, “motang”, “SG-1″, “jasonhe”.

We enjoy Digg ourselves but more recently it appears a few more checks and balances need to be put in place if users will continue to control the content. One definition of SPAM according to Digg is when a story is submitted for personal gain. I’m pretty confident none of the people above or any of the others that submitted our articles gained anything ;) (your check is in the mail guys…).

That’s why I abandoned Digg and moved to Reddit. They don’t parade themselves as a democratic, user-driven news source and then secretly moderate/censor the stories.

I’m slowly giving up on digg. I’d even go so far as to say it’s the new Myspace.

Well, guess it’s just bad luck, but then again I don’t think your stories not getting dugg will make any difference to us regular readers of the blog :)

Well i’m glad to see that i’m not alone on digg replacement.

    cheers

When i first joined digg a few months ago I thought it was really cool. But lately I’ve been seeing a ton of diggs on stories that are soo stupid its not even funny.

That’s BS. All the articles I’ve read here are top quality and very advising. Don’t worry about digg, just keep up the good work and you will always have support.

This is the one of the most generous, informative tech blogs I read. I was always happy to see an article from CyberNet make it to the Digg front page.

What kind of policy is a ban that will never be removed? Very rarely are any “absolutes” logical or practical.

We’re glad to hear that everyone is enjoying our articles. We’re not so concerned about not receiving the traffic because the amount of traffic we have been receiving from front page stories is rapidly decreasing. A few months ago a front page story typically meant 40,000 to 50,000 visitors while our most recent story that made the front page only brought 4,900 visitors. We receive more than that on a typical day without anyone from Digg.

I’m sure we’ll continue to grow and we hope you will grow with us! :D

Funny how this blog gets knocked down, by the Digg bury brigade, but they don’t complain about all the other blogs on Digg!

Take for example TechCrunch, their quality in my opinion, as dropped significantly, and is still a blog, that is religiously submitted to Digg. Their blog seems more like paid advertisements in blog posts, as if he were being paid (maybe they are…idk) to post all these new and upcoming web 2.0 sites that will all never make it because they don’t have a pre-established base and don’t innovate enough to compete.

The TechCrunch BLOG seems a little too much like an infomercial to me. I like maybe 1 or 2 stories in ever 100 they post, at best. And each time, I’ve already read and seen the content from other sources. And he just ends up scamming the story from another blog or website, without sourcing them and giving them credit for the content.

Beyond them, there are tons of other blogs that hit Digg, that are good and bad, that aren’t prevented from submission by Digger’s unmerited complaints. ThinkProgress is a blog, CrooksAndLiers is a blog, both of which have good content, no better or worse in general than this website, just different topic. Yet these websites don’t get blocked by Digg users.

Note: These actions aren’t representative of the Digg team, but rather the opinions and resulting actions of of the Digg community.

Diggers are more and more abusing their power on the site, only to deteriorate the quality of content. It is unavoidable that you’ll get the bad apples on the Internet, when you leave the good niche website community that Digg once was, becoming popular with the masses.

Anytime a social website becomes this open and this popular, what I like to refer to as the “Myspace Kids of the Internet,” will hit your website, those are what I consider in general the bad apples online. The people who only go on the Internet to f*** around, and piss people off, etc….only for their own stupid entertainment.

I mean even by definition Digg.com is a blog really. I find that blogs, if you view the good/right ones, are more accurate, and report better stories, than conventional mass media markets, that have hit the Internet from other such mediums as TV and newspapers. So I can’t find justification for people’s “disgust” with blogs. The people who flame about them in my opinion are nothing but ignorant, arrogant hypocrites often times.

Either way, this website will definitely maintain it’s popularity, and grow without Digg. Keep on posting your good stories Ryan!

What usually hyappens is a website is “edgy” and “new” and “shiny” so it catches steam. But in order to keep that steam, you have to do one of 2 things:

Keep up with the flashy and keep the user base

    -or-

reinvent yourself so that you find a steady user basse that will continuously come for content.

The only problem with user generated content is the type of users it attracts. Either way they moderate it, they would lose. So that’s why there’s alternatives, like digg to reddit and MySpace to Facebook.

I don’t Digg, and probably never will. I only heard about digg when I saw those funny icons on the pages.

I never used Digg and never will. I find the news I want on my own. I found CyberNet here and will stay. it is one of the best technology news sites around.

Thank you Ryan and your team. Keep going as you are.

Hey guys just keep doing what you doing, I shall be a fan. You guys have given me some good advice about Firefox so I shall be coming back for more. Cheers.

Thanks for mentioning my name in the thanks note (and I shall be looking forward to my check) ;)

I never actually visit Digg, but instead get a conglomeration from http://diggdot.us/ — a combined feed from Digg, SlashDot, and del.ico.us.

I only wish they would provide options to add more feeds to their site, because I like the way it looks and works.

We really really appreciate all of the support from everyone. There is no way that Digg will bring us down and we are sure that our growth will continue.

Looking at some more of our stats shows that StumbleUpon is also a really big source of people. Each week we normally receive a few thousand people from there. Who would have thought that such a random idea could bring such a good amount of traffic.

 :|  8O :) :? 8) :D   :P  ;) :o  :x :( :!: :?:
