Download Windows Live OneCare 1.5 Beta - Vista Compatible
I can’t believe it took so long but Microsoft finally released a Vista compatible version of Windows Live OneCare. I have almost gotten up the nerve to try it out but I just don’t feel secure using an antivirus by Microsoft…and I don’t know why. They should be the ones that can provide the best solution because no one knows the system better than them, but they are so new to the market.
Here is a list of what’s new in this release:
- Service for 17 international markets (Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, UK, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, and Switzerland)
- Unified antivirus and anti-spyware filtering capabilities
- More back up options with the addition of local network computers and USB-connected storage devices
- Support for the Windows Vista operating system
I have downloaded the file by following the steps that they gave me after I entered in my email address. So there is no need for you to enter in your email because you can just use these steps (Windows XP SP2 or Vista build 5500 and beyond are the only ones supported):
Step 1: Remove any other antivirus or firewall products from your PC.
Step 2: Go to Windows Live OneCare Beta v1.5 Setup.
Step 3: Follow the step-by-step instructions. Once Windows Live OneCare installation is complete, your PC will restart.
I love how they say to remove other antivirus or firewall products. Hmmm…how do I remove the Windows Firewall?!?
If you want to see more of what it looks like then check out the quick screenshot gallery that Paul Thurrott threw up. It gives you a nice glance at OneCare in Vista and gives you an idea of what to expect.

I have the same hesitations as you Ryan. Do you know how long you get to use OneCare 1.5 free of charge??
Hmmm, I can’t find that information anywhere. It would have to be at least 90 days because that is what the normal trial period is. I am really close to installing it…it’s on my desktop right now.
Haha, me too I hated it before because I got a virus on Win XP Pro and it didn’t help me at all. But I’m such a software freak that I can’t resist. As I’m sure you are too!
Okay, I broke down. You have 180 days to activate it which comes out to 6 months (for those that don’t feel like doing the math). It seems OK but it isn’t very customizable.
I used onecare when it was in beta - (for XP). Then uninstalled it as it slowed down my comp to a great extent.
Later I purchased the full version assuming the performance issue to have been rectified. Again the comp slowed down. Have put onecare on the AOL camp (will never ever install again!!!)
I too am hesitant to use this. besides, I use free antivirus software (currently Avast). I do use the Windows Defender beta. However, if they start charging for it, then I will move to something free.
Yeah I broke down too and installed it. I like how it looks and some of the things it does… but truth be told - it is NOT a customizable software program and I hate that. Also I doubt its true capability to protect from viruses. I’ll probably use it for a while and then change back to Avast!
I ended up switching back to Avast! for that exact reason. When the survey popped up for uninstalling it one of the options said something about not having enough advanced options. Apparently they must already realize this.
I reviewed OneCare today, based on testing it over several days. My verdict: try it only on a computer you don’t really care about.

You even purchased it.
I can’t say that I’m surprised with the outcome but it is pretty disappointing. I would expect Microsoft’s antivirus solution to be among the best. Looks like that’s not the case at all.
I had very bad experience onecare , it actually slow down the computer.
