Nero 7 Is Now Vista Compatible

October 24th, 2006

Nero 7 It took a little while and some frustrated Vista users but Nero released a Vista compatible version over a week ago. Thanks to DanBart for pointing this out in the comments otherwise I don’t know if I would have gone to see if it was compatible yet.

Surviving without Nero was quite tedious but there were a few applications that I used along the way that helped me cope. One of those programs was ImgBurn which allows you to burn CD/DVD images using the free software. It is definitely nice but you’ll run into limitations.

Also in the comments OldManDeath said that Dell had Nero 7 for $59.99 after the $20 mail-in rebate. This is far from a bad deal so if you have yet to purchase the software this is a pretty good deal. Hope everyone is as happy as I am to see the new Nero!

Actually, there was not a 20 mail in rebate, it was instant.

However, I am a little pissed right now because I received my copy today and when I ran the installer, I got a dialog box that says it is not compatible with Vista!

Nero’s tech support is a rip off because they charge you $1.29 per minute for phone support. This for a full retail product you purchase???? It is so asinine!!!

I have emailed tech support, but expect to wait forever to get an answer, if I get one at all.

So I decided to try and install again. This time I got a prompt that said it did not install correctly and if I wanted to install (I think there was something about compatibility). So I did and the installer ran, I agreed to the license, entered my S/N. Then it wants to install DirectX 9.0c! Vista has DirectX 10! It said it needed to “upgrade” my DirectX, who the hell programmed this??? So I cancelled and will wait in hopes that Nero tech support will contact me.

Couldn’t you just download the new version and use your serial number? That should work.

I am trying that now. Still The box says it is the Ultra Edition “Enhanced”, which is also their new name for the vista compatible release.

To me, this is totally unacceptable. The program should work out of the box for the system it is said to work on. However, the included book does not list Vista as a supported OS.

Ok. I tried that. It STILL want to “improve” my system by installing DirectX 9.0c.

I do not want to do that because I do not know if it will screw up DirectX. I know in the past, DirectX would not revert back to an earlier version when you install it like it did in the early days of DirectX. However, I am skeptical.

So today I took the plunge and just let it “improve” my system with DirectX v9.0c. After rebooting, dxdiag still shows DirectX v10, so I assume it did not overwrite the v10.

BTW…Like normal tech support these days, Nero’s tech support did not read my email and told me that it is Vista Compatible. Here is their response:

    Dear valued customer,

thank you for your email and your interest in our software.

Nero 7 is now Windows vista ready !
Our latest version Nero 7.5.7.0 now support Windows Vista RC1.

They did not address my question at all about it wanting to “improve” my system by installing DirectX v9.0c.

I should have known better from the start than to try tech support.

I actually don’t remember if I was prompted with changing my Direct X or not, but everything is working great here. I’m glad that you got everything worked out and you knew deep down that you were just going to get an automated response anyways. ;)
