I normally don’t post about WordPress related things but since another milestone release is schedule for Monday I figured I could make an exception. I did mention this release in the forum last week because I came across some amazing screenshots that represented what the Administration screen was supposed to look like. Well, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it looks like the nice makeover won’t be coming this time around.
To keep up on WordPress pre-release versions you’re supposed to subscribe to their mailing list, but if you’re anything like me you might want to try and keep your Inbox free from clutter. If that’s the case all you need is this site which is the web-based version of their mailing list. In there you can find the download links for the pre-release versions of WordPress. I saw that the second release candidate was sitting in there, so I thought I would give it a shot.
Now I’m not quite sure what to expect in the way of new features, but the administration screen is essentially the same. There are two things that I did notice a difference on though:
There is now a separate section for managing your comments:
You can block search engines from visiting your site, while still allowing normal visitors:
My favorite thing would be the classy login page though:
I’m not 100% sure when I’ll get around to upgrading to WordPress 2.1, but I hope to do it within a few days of it being released. I’ll have to play around with some plug-in compatibility along with a few other things, but I have heard some good things about speed enhancements and such.

Do you use wordpress for this site?
Yes, we use WordPress
That login screen shot is login for free blog wordpress.com now
Nice to see the privacy feature making it into the new release. This is something that they’ve offered for a while on WordPress hosted blogs. Good to see this being made available to all now.
Do you know of any other reasons that people would not want to be indexed other than it being just a personal site that doesn’t want search hits? I just always figured if someone wanted a private blog they would just require logins.
I think it is mostly private blogs that would use this feature. Do you know if search engines can index a site that requires a login? Maybe that is why there is a privacy option.
Also, enabling the privacy option on a blog that has been running for several months/years won’t be of much use, since Google and all the other search engines would have already indexed the content on your site. Although it should block future content being indexed by the search engines.
I’ve got to update my site soon. The login is really really cool.
It is pretty nice, and I have to say that the few new features on the Admin screen are nice…particularly the WYSIWYG editor that can easily be switched to the HTML editor.
