Google Reader Now Supports Embedded Videos

January 31st, 2007

If you use Google Reader, you may have noticed a small but nice update.  Now you’ll be able to view videos within the reader that have been embedded into articles.  They were nice enough to offer support for other services besides Google Video and YouTube. Here’s the list of supported sites:

  • Google Video
  • YouTube
  • MySpace
  • Jumpcut
  • Grouper
  • IFILM
  • Metacafe
  • Revver
  • Vimeo
  • vSocial
  • Monsters and Critics

Again, a small but nice update to the reader.

–Other Google Reader Stuff-

You’ve probably at least heard of Greasemonkey, a Firefox extension that lets you add “user scripts” to any web page to change different elements of it.  There are Greasemoneky scripts that have been created for so many different websites, and Google Reader is one of them.

I came across several scripts specifically for Google Reader that you may find useful.  I’ll list some of them below, but a complete list can be found here.

Preview: Replaces Google Reader’s article summary with a frame containing the actual blog item.

Search: Adds a search box in Google Reader

Toggle Sidebar - Allows you to show or hide the left sidebar.  The website says this script is obsolete, however it was just updated today. I tried it out and it worked great. By pressing the ‘W’ key, you’ll be able to hide the left sidebar with your list of feeds. It gives you more reading room, especially if you’re using a laptop.

The toggle sidebar script is obsolete, there’s a built in keyboard shortcut (press “U”) for it.

Ahh, nice. I actually told Ashley about that one because I use it from time to time. I didn’t realize that Google had built it in.
