We haven’t really heard much about the Zune since it launched, other than an update here and there. The last we heard was when it became Vista Compatible back in December. The latest news is that Update 1.3 will be available soon.
According to Zune Insider, around March 20th, or mid-march, Zune Firmware update 1.3 will be available with a few new changes. The changes they list include:
- We’re fixing the skipping problem that some users were experiencing – that is, content acquired from Zune Marketplace will no longer skip when played on the device.
- Improved device and software reliability, when it comes to device detection, and improved sync’ing.
- We’ve made some changes to the FM Tuner so it no longer drains the battery when in sleep mode.
People have been waiting patiently for this update, and from the sounds of it, people are already disappointed with the slim list of changes. They expected more features from Microsoft, but it appears Microsoft focused more on the bugs.

You quoted, “We’ve made some changes to the FM Tuner so it no longer drains the battery when in sleep mode.”
I have a Zune [black], WHAT IS SLEEP MODE? I’ve never heard this referenced for the Zune. I’ve heard of sleep timers but I’m pretty sure the Zune doesn’t have one (unless they’re now adding it).
The Zune feature I’d really like is removable disk support (without hacks).
I’m quoting from this site:
“To force the Zune into sleep mode (which is when it’s really off and consuming no battery power), press and hold the Back button then press down on the control pad. After four seconds or so, the Zune will go into sleep (off) mode and it will no longer use any battery power. To turn the Zune on again, you’ll need to press and hold the Play/Pause button and it will boot up - taking 15 seconds to complete.”
Hope that helps!
Aha, I knew of and have used sleep mode, I just never knew that’s it’s name. I don’t think sleep mode is a very good name for it, as “sleep” seems less powered off while in reality this is the full powered down mode.
So before the battery would drain while in sleep mode -somehow due to the FM tuner? If that’s the case it’s a good fix.
I noticed the sync’ing glitches a lot -mostly the software resisting updating metadata album art of existing tracks on zune device. This is a very important fix.
Hopefully I’ll see removable disk support sometime
From some of the different sites I’ve been on, I don’t think you’re alone with that request. Hopefully Microsoft listens.
Finally got the update, I wouldn’t consider the 28th mid-March, although at least it was in march. The most apparent change so far is disconnecting the Zune returns the menu almost instantly. Hopefully this will fix problems where track info/art wasn’t updated.
Now let’s see some removable disk support!
Hey, just a few weeks behind schedule is pretty darn good for Microsoft.
What is firmware cause my D-Pad broke and the people at best buy told me to download firmware and i want to know what that is and how to download it
:!:
You should be able to download the firmware through the Zune software.
