According to TUAW.com, they’re saying that the latest numbers suggest that there are around 9,000 new people per day that switch to a Mac. The numbers come from Tom Yager over at InfoWorld who based his calculations upon Steve Jobs’ claim that half of Macs are sold to first-time buyers.
Yager is also conducting an experiment with a lifelong Windows user. He’s set someone up with a MacBook and a copy of Paralells so that she can experiment with the Mac operating system, but still have access to Windows. He’s trying to see if in the end, she’ll make the switch.
While Apple is growing, 9,000 seems a bit high, but also doesn’t take into consideration all of the people who don’t use Apple exclusively. I know several people who use a Mac for work, and stick with their PC at home.
If it’s true, perhaps the Get a Mac campaign is doing more than giving people a few laughs?

If that’s true, Mac sales better be increasing pretty rapidly….or else people are switching BACK at high rates also.
9,000 is too much, TUAW is a web about apple, and you know for MACers all that world of mac is like a religion, trust me, the number is less, and not to mention the number of people going back to win.
Apple is a big company, and as a big company it has no other goal than profit, and lies are permitted.
Ohh!, i forgot, i am one of the “going back to win” persons, and not happy with windows, but its better than apple, apple yes its an authentic monopoly and expensive “made in china” products, leechers.
I would switch if the hardware did not cost so much. If I could buy and install OS/X on my existing computer then I would probably jump all over it.
Why did you choose to switch back to Windows out of curiosity? I only ever hear about stories of why people are switching to Macs and never the reverse.
I have thought about that as well, but there are too many things that I like to do on a PC that hold me back from switching to a Mac…especially with the new Office 2007 it leaves a lot to be desired with the Mac version of Office. Heck, there isn’t even an Intel version (universal binary) of Office 2004 available for Macs which.
I’m surprised I’m the first to mention the error: last line, “…doing more that giving people a few laughs?” [that] should be [than].
I have used macs a handful of times at the mac store, and I never can really enjoy them. One biggie is the lack of support for tons of apps. Also, I find it hard to operate with a one-buttoned mouse! Now I’ve seen some that are one button, but if you press to the right side it right-clicks. The problem is that only works about half the time. I find myself holding [ctrl] and clicking. Also, I like having a screen size button as opposed to a full height button, although I guess the mac’s full height button could be good with widescreen monitors. Also, gamers will never move to the mac. Although I have to say Macs are improving.
the why
with 3000€ i can by a customized “non-made in china” pc with 4 mb’s of memory and a 27″ screen(dell with lot of contrast and colors), try that on mac.
And because i hate mac people, its a cult with a priest.
I’ll stay away of that world, no, anymore.
I was thoroughly confused the first time I saw a one-button mouse that actually was two separate buttons…but I have to admit on the mighty mouse that the scroll wheel is nice for doing the horizontal scrolling since it is just a ball.
That gave me a good laugh!
I also agree that they are too expensive, but a lot of people claim that the hardware included is superior to most PC’s. The only thing that is really nice in my opinion is the aluminum case where Dell’s are mostly plastic. Other than that the internal pieces are going to be about the same since they are Intel processors now.
Once again, the problems Windows people bring up about Macs here are either utter nonsense or nonexistent, and the benefits are ignored. You’re welcome to Windows, and frankly you deserve it.
It always amazes me how passionate people are over their computer. There are die-hard Windows fans, and die-hard Mac fans that’ll do everything they can do get you to make the switch either way. It reminds me too much of political parties here in the U.S.
Every operating system, no matter what people say, has its own benefits for the people who use it. That is, after all, why people are using it. If someone thought that they were using an inferior operating system then they would surely switch. If one operating system offered everything everybody wanted then why would anyone use a different operating system?
I haven’t had a lot of time to spend with a Mac computer so I have no place to say what is great about it…which is why I stick to Windows reviews.
