5 Things You Need to Know about the Optimus Maximus Keyboard
We’ve been talking about the Optimus Maximus keyboard for months now (here, here, and here), and finally they’ve agreed upon the number of keys, set a price, and they’re just about ready to take pre-orders! As you’ll recall, the Optimus Maximus is the name of the “Digital” Keyboard that gives the user ultimate customization. The Optimus Maximus keyboard will be made up of OLED’s so that each key has a display.

Since the project began, so many changes have happened – from the release date, to whether it was going to be in color or black and white, even how many keys it was going to have (103? 113? 114?). So, here’s what you need to know:
- The Optimus Maximus team finally decided upon 114 keys with 10 extra keys on the left side of the keyboard that will give you extra customization.
- A price was finally ironed out, and people who want to get their hands on one will need to shell out $1,490.00 (they will be taking pre-orders later in March).
- If a key breaks, you can purchase a replacement for $10 (not bad eh?)
- Expected release date is November/early December 2007 (cross your fingers with this one, it’s changed a million times!).
- Each display on every key is 32×32 pixels (full color).
Assuming they deliver in November or December as they say they will, they’ll be able to avoid getting a Vaporware Award as they did last year, “the years top technology products promised, hyped and scheduled, but not delivered.”
If you have extra cash laying around ($1,490 dollars worth) that you’re not quite sure what to do with, prepare yourself for the Optimus Maximus, coming soon (hopefully)!

I really want that keyboard. But I wouldn’t spend more than $200 on it. Possibly $250. It does look sweet though.
It does look pretty cool, but I just wouldn’t feel right about spending almost $1500 on a keyboard!
It looks pretty cool, been seeing people talking about it everywhere for a while.
But 1500 bucks, for a keyboard? You must be kidding.
Some people do have money to burn tho and I’m sure they’ll sell quite a few of them, to the same crowd of people that buy ten thousand dollar TV’s.
am i the only one who doesn’t get the hype surrounding this thing?
seriously, you’d have to be such an r-tard to spend >300 on a keyboard.
A keyboard that offers that much customization is indeed cool, but I know it costs too much when I can buy a really nice computer for the same price. And a five year lifespan? Yikes!
$1500!? That is more than what most computers cost now.
OMG, we all expected to see the $1200 revealed as a joke, now the price has gone up!!!
Of course that makes the Microsoft Entertainment Wireless Desktop 8000 a steal at $250!
I think deep down we all knew that this thing was going to be way out of our price range, but we just wanted to believe that we would be able to afford it…so much for those hopes.
At $250 I don’t think it is almost a freebie compared to the Optimus!
