Soon AOL will be joining Yahoo on the list of web-based mail services that offer unlimited storage. Webware is reporting that in the coming weeks, we can expect both the unlimited storage as well as integrated chatting. The integrated chatting would make it easier for those who use AIM to chat with their contacts right from their mail, much like the integrated chat in Gmail. Surprisingly, AOL Mail remains the third most popular web-based mail service in the United States (behind Yahoo and Hotmail) and despite what some may think, it’s available to everybody (not just those using AOL’s dial-up service).
Additional updates will improve the service, make it more usable and easy to use, but also help it compete with the long list of competitors. Features will include:
- RSS feeds
- Attachment search capabilities
- POP and IMAP compatibility
Hotmail and Gmail have yet to move to unlimited storage, although most of the population won’t ever need unlimited storage. It’s funny how 1GB of storage was an extremely generous offering when Gmail launched. Then 2GB of storage blew everybody away, but now it seems like nothing as other services move towards unlimited. I’m sure it won’t be long before we add another service to the “unlimited-storage” list. It’s turning into the place to be for web-based mail services.

:O Did my eyes deceive me? IMAP support!! Woooo!
Looks like Unlimited is going to be the hot new thing.
Technically it Aol already has Imap (for Thunderbird and Live Mail desktop), and hopefully it’ll be better than Yahoo!’s bullshitty “unlimited mail”. I tried backing up 37 GB of mail there, and it canceled my account. “Your account has been canceled due to the following reason: spam folder exceeded”. WTF?! If they can’t live up to the name, don’t advertise it.
Wow! 37GB of email is a lot, but you’re right that they shouldn’t advertise something that they can’t deliver on.
Interesting, I wonder if anybody else has had the same problem.
Yahoo! still says I have a 1 GB limit. Of course I am using 0% of that.
Yah, it depends on your farm. Y! rolls out updates very slowly.
Upfront Disclaimer: I’m with the AOL Mail Team in CA.
The new AIM chat feature is coming very soon and there is a screen shot of what it’ll look like. It’ll be first available as an opt-in beta version, so that users can switch back and forth between it and the production version, on-the-fly.
If anyone wants to try the new free AOL Web Suite (web mail and more), it’s at: http://webmail.aol.com
And the Unlimited Storage for AIM Mail users will be here at the same time (soon).
