We knew that Google had been working on integrating Encyclopedia Britannica and Meriam-Webster’s dictionary into Google Docs, thanks to the Google Operating System Blog.  Google has yet to release this feature, but now there’s a way for you to start using the dictionary through the use of a short line of JavaScript code.

Tony Ruscoe is always good for digging around and finding  ways to use the new Google features before they’re released. This JavaScript code is all thanks to him! All you have to do is:

  1. Open a Google Docs document
  2. Paste the following code into your browser’s address bar and hit return:
    javascript:void(INCLUDE_BRITANNICA_INTEGRATION=true);
  3. Right-click any word in your document so that you can view the extra items that have been added to your menu through the use of the JavaScript code.

This is what it will look like when you right-click on any word:

Websters

Notice at the bottom of the menu you’ll see new options for “Dictionary definition ” and “Encyclopedia article.” The encyclopedia doesn’t work, but the dictionary does. This is what the interface will look like for a Merriam Webster Definition:

Now, what makes this even better is that Haochi over at Googlified created a GreaseMonkey script so that you won’t have to copy and paste the line of JavaScript every time you go to Google Docs. Nice, huh? You can find his GreaseMonkey script here.
