It appears as though movie rentals from iTunes are on the way! This is one of those things that just makes sense for Apple to do. They already sell movies on iTunes, and they sell Apple TV which they promote as "iTunes to Apple TV, wire free," so why not rent movies to make Apple TV and their iPods capable of playing movies that much more appealing?
The image below is what you’ll see if you were to use iTunes problem reporting system, and this is where Apple slipped-up to reveal movie rentals. All you have to do is view your account purchase history, click to report a problem, and then click on a purchase that you made and you’ll notice all of the problems you could report for renting a movie like "did not receive," "accidental purchase," "duplicate purchase," "wrong version," and "Bad Metadata."
I’d also assume that Apple would rent movies that are formatted appropriately for iPods, especially with their new line-up of iPods capable of watching movies. This would definitely be a good move for Apple because many people, including myself, prefer to rent movies instead of buy them. And if Apple could offer some type of subscription service like what Netflix or Blockbuster are able to offer, well then it’s just icing on the cake!

My guess is that you could rent a movie and then watch it on your computer, iPod, or television thanks to Apple TV.
That’s nothing but bad news for Netflix. This is another area that they will have to play catch-up.
The Netflix’s “Watch Now” feature is nice, but a larger selection of movies and television shows is needed and the ability to transfer the features to a portable device.
I hope Netflix sees the writing on the wall and start making progress soon. I would hate to see them start losing subscribers.
I agree with CoryC. Hopefully it will be some sort of download that deletes it’s self after so many days.
With Blockbuster bragging about how you can get movies quicker by going to thier store instead of waiting for them in the mail… Apple would have a HUGE advantage this way. You wouldn’t even have to leave your house!
I think this is stupid of Apple because as soon as they release these movies for rentals, people will find a way to strip them of their DRM. Then anything could be done with the movie, and it will essentially be like buying it for a lower price. An iTunes update would fix that, but it would just be circumvented again.
I’m not sure if Netflix has to watchout for anything though. They have a huge market, and even Jobs has said that Apple TV is a hobby. I actually haven’t seen one of these in person yet.
Some people would definitely take the time to do that, however, I don’t think the majority of the people would abuse it.
