The thing that I don’t always get with Microsoft is that when they do something right, they don’t go all out. Their Windows Live SkyDrive is definitely one of the best file storage services available because of its powerful and easy-to-mange online interface, but it is very much lacking in storage size.
I mean come on, they just doubled the storage limit and are only at 1GB? I can’t even back up my documents which weigh in at 1.75GB, and it therefore makes the service a bit useless for me.
When you put them up against the competition they don’t fair very well. Xdrive (owned by AOL) is offering users 5GB of storage for free, Mozy hooks you up with 2GB, and Carbonite will give you unlimited storage for just $50 per year. I would want at least 2GB of storage before jumping on the SkyDrive bandwagon, but 5GB would make using it a bit more comfortable.
Aside from the storage upgrade the SkyDrive team also added a few new features:
- RSS feeds for public folders - receive updates whenever a folder is updated
- Integrated address book - add contacts from within SkyDrive
- Upload identification - shows who has uploaded each file
So come on Microsoft, double the storage a few more times.

Relax, Microsoft will bump the limit up in due time. They have to build out the data centers and that takes time and money.
I bet there mostly concerned about making the service available to a large number of people so the limit has to be modest.
I guess that’s true, but a lot of the people I’ve talked to say they won’t use it until they hit several gigs of storage. I think Microsoft would be able to get the datacenters up fast enough to afford that, but I could be wrong.
I think what they are really doing is trying to see how successful a service like this can be before they go investing a bunch of money into it.
Would we worth seeing. I’m currently using Mozy and have approximately 9GB of space due to the referals.
Well I just found about this like yesterday (I guess I was in a cave or something) and quickly gave it a try and good hooked on it…I do agree a gig is pretty small but I am sure Microsoft will bump that up soon.
That’s one of the things that I like about Mozy is their referral system. My storage quota is at 15GB or somewhere around there.
It is an easy thing to get hooked on. Microsoft did a great job on the interface and usability.
Mozy is backing p over 98 GB on one of my systems. Total for all three computer is around 115 GB.
There is no way MS is going to compete with that and I don’t think that’s the purpose of SkyDrive.
Are you backing up your entire computer or something?
Well, some people back up lots of software that was downloaded from various torrent networks, so I’ve heard.
Also, there are home movies, music, pictures, game files…the list go on.
You know, I think I’ve heard about people like that before.
