TechSmith has decided to offer both of their award-winning applications as free downloads! The first application is SnagIt, which is used to capture and create screenshots on your computer. The only catch is that they will give you a free license only for SnagIt 7.2.5, whereas the current version is SnagIt 8.2. One of the big drawbacks is that this version will not work properly in Windows Vista.
Here’s what you have to do to get SnagIt 7.2.5 for free:
- Download SnagIt 7.2.5 in your language: English, German, or French.
- Request a free license for the software.
The second application is Camtasia Studio, which is used to make and edit video screencasts. This is a $300 application, but just like with SnagIt you will not get the latest Camtasia 5 that was recently released. Instead you will get Camtasia 3, but it will satisfy the needs of most Windows users with the exception of those running Vista.
Here’s what you have to do to get Camtasia Studio 3 for free:
They may not be the latest versions of the applications, but that doesn’t mean they are lacking in quality. I’m sure these will be more than adequate if you don’t care about running the latest software.

The timing couldn’t be better as I was just working on some video tutorial stuff!
I already made the screen captures with CamStudio though, but I’ll certainly check out Camtasia asap. I have to admit, from what I’ve read it seems pretty cool. Panning and zooming are things that you don’t need to make your videos, but it sure makes them look a lot more professional.
Isn’t this the same as using the “print screen” button on your keyboard…which requires no software and is free? Just wondering what the advantage was.
I’m not 100% sure, but for some reason I don’t think Camtasia 3 had the panning and zooming yet. It might have, but I think that might have been one of the new features in version 4. It’s still a sweet application with an awesome video editor though. Definitely top notch.
SnagIt offers a full-featured screenshot editor, which will let you add things like text boxes, callouts, arrows, and highlighting to your screenshots. You can also do things like resize the screenshots and apply special effects to them. So it is a step up from the “Print Screen”.
It’s actually much, much more than just “print screen.” I’ve gotten so accustomed to using screen capture software that I don’t know what I’d do without it!
Thanks a lot! I’ve already received my SnagIt free license.
