Sync Microsoft Office Documents with Google Docs

For those of you who use both Microsoft Office and Google Docs, you’re going to love a fairly new web app called DocSyncer. DocSyncer makes it possible to synchronize your Microsoft Office documents with your Google Docs account.  It’s pretty genius, isn’t it? I’m actually surprised Google hasn’t thought to try to implement something like this on their own. Earlier this week DocSyncer launched into an invite-only beta, so if you want to be a beta tester, you’ll need to sign up for an invite.

There may be some of you who are comfortable and familiar with Word and aren’t really interested in trying something online like Google Docs.  This new web app should help because when you make a change in a document in Office, the changes will appear in Google Docs as well. It sounds like it takes little to no effort on your part, really. While I haven’t tried the utility myself, it does look like it has a clean and simple interface, and hopefully it’s fast too.

The only downside that I can see is simply getting enough people to use it. Many people who use Google Docs have no interest in using Microsoft Office, and many people who use Microsoft Office have no interested in using an online solution, let alone both. For those who do use both though, this will be an awesome tool to have. Another item in question is whether or not it supports the new file formats offered in Office 2007. My guess is that it won’t, but I won’t know for sure until I’m able to try it out first hand.

Considering how fast Google tends to sweep up company after company, I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if DocSyncer ends up in the list of Google Acquisitions for 2008.

Well, actually there’s a similar extension for OpenOffice Writer that’s called GoogleDocs.

Seeing that Google is making SunOffice available for free, i guess they’re not really interested (at least not directly) with MSN products.

True, although I think they definitely have some interest in what Microsoft is doing.
