Biggest Tech Disappointments of 2007

December 17th, 2007

prepare for disappointment PCWorld recently published their “15 Biggest Tech Disappointments of 2007” which they said were “much-ballyhooed products, sites, and services, it turned out, left much to be desired.” They called them the “biggest losers” and said that they left a sour taste in their mouths. After reading the list, I’m not sure what was up with their editors when they made their selections.  It’s like they took some of the best products and services that were the most popular this year (minus a few exceptions) and dug for a way in which they could put a negative spin on them. I’d guess that their intention was to try and get as much publicity as possible from this, and if that’s the case, we fell for it. So, without further ado, here’s PCWorld’s 15 biggest tech disappointments of 2007:

15.  Amazon Unbox
14.  Municipal WiMax
13.  Social Networks
12.  Internet Security
11.  Microsoft Zune
10.  Wireless Carriers
9.   Office 2007
8.   Apple “Leopard” OS 10.5
7.   Voice Over IP
6.   The Broadband Industry
5.   Apple iPhone
4.   Yahoo!
3.   Facebook Beacon
2.   The High-Def Format War
1.   Windows Vista

At first glance, when I saw Amazon Unbox on the list I thought, “Okay, it deserves to be there.” It certainly was a disappointment and I think it’s safe to say it was a flop.  But then I got down to “Social Networks” at number 13 and was baffled. Social Networks were a hit this year.  Sure, there’s an over-abundance of them, but PCWorld said sharing photos and videos is all “so… 2006.” Facebook made huge strides this year when thousands of 3rd party applications made their way to the site, so what’s so disappointing about that?

And what about Office 2007? It ranks number 9 on the list of biggest disappointments, but for myself, it’s been far from a disappointment. Nearly everybody I know who has used the new Office had a bit of a hard time adjusting to the changes, but once they did, they couldn’t imagine going back. The ribbons are awesome and save so much time, but PCWorld said “Ribbon schmibbon.  We’ll take the classic menus, please.” Hmmm..

Once I got down to #8 (Apple Leopard) and #5 (Apple iPhone), I was thinking that this surely had to be a joke, but let me assure you that it’s not. Their complaint with the iPhone is that it’s not opened up to everybody, only people who lock in to long contracts with certain carriers. Well duh, we already knew this! Yes, it is disappointing, but does that make the iPhone one of the greatest disappointments for the year? I think not.

I’m thinking that over the course of the year, PCWorld learned that by saying “Vista sucks,” they’ll get all of the fanboys talking and they like that. Perhaps this is why their number one biggest disappointment of the year is Windows Vista. They said “five years in the making and this is the best Microsoft could do?” Yes, it did take Microsoft quite a bit of time, and yes, we were all originally expecting Vista to be Longhorn, and it wasn’t.  But saying that “Vista isn’t all that good” and making it the biggest disappointment of the year is taking things a little too far. Were there some disappointing elements to Vista? Absolutely!

Had PCWorld put Windows Vista Ultimate on the list, I would have had no complaints because the promised “Ultimate Extras” have been nearly non-existent. But Vista itself? It doesn’t deserve to be there, nor do just about half of the other products and services on the list. Come on PCWorld, that’s the best you could come up with? What a disappointment.

I definitely understand the Office 2007 thing. If you are new to Office, then it’s great (love the ribbons and new features), but it is riddled with many bugs that rear their ugly heads especially with using older files in the new Office. For example, if you don’t have a locally defined, approved MS printer, you’ll get very weird things happening with your powerpoint presentation (many of us don’t as we print to a network printer). OR, if you use excel, try easily creating graphs without 5x as many clicks as you used to have… somethings they improved, some things they definitely did not.

social networks are losing their luster.

some of the other things are listed because they’re annoying. the whole iphone/mac campaign is extremely annoying. it’s more of a fashion statement than functionality.

vista hasn’t gone over that well with consumers, at least the ones i’ve talked to.

zune seems to be doing well.

agree with the wireless carriers and broadband industry points.

It only takes me like two clicks to create a chart. I think it’s easy to create a chart in Excel 2007 than it was previously.

We better put PCWorld on our own disappointment list.

I just don’t get what people don’t like about Vista. The only issues I had so far was my games crashing, but after patching them up, they’re as good as any other game (I’m still waiting for the NBA Live 08 patch, EA!). And the Vista sales went up (correct me again if I’m wrong, but I remember reading it somewhere). I think the Zunes are not supposed to be there, I mean, I don’t have a Zune, but people I know love it, and since it is selling then it should be a success, right? The iPhone was selling out, so was Leopard. And people started saying that Leopard was so friggin’ awesome just because its not Vista. Agh. Facebook sold well too. Plenty people joining + Microsoft buys them = big bucks for Zuckerberg.

Is it just me or does selling a lot mean disappointment for PCWorld? Quick, stop patronizing PCWorld so they’ll be a big success. Pft.

I’ve been critical of Vista, naturally, but it doesn’t deserve #1 for biggest disappointments, I agree guys. That’s just not fair at all. Yes, Ultimate Extras DOES deserve to be #1, absolutely, but Vista itself, despite all its previous issues and disappointments, is solid.

Shows the listmakers just went with the easy pick.

What the hell kind of bizzaro list is this? I’m not sure I agree with more than one of those 15! They listed all the most well known products by MS and Apple, and then even added on general tech markets like Hi-Def, Social Networks, Internet Security… They even said Yahoo!!!

So, the top tech magazine basically just said the entire technology industry sucks.

Not only is this bizzare, it doesn’t make any sense. Ex- PCWorld rated MS Office an 85:Very Good, calling it “a worthy upgrade.”

I’m with you, arjay, PCWorld sucks. I usually go to pcmag.com when I want to see reviews. Before it was mainly because that site is easier to find reviews on. Now it’ll also be because PCW seriously needs better perspective.

I disagree with your argument that the addition of the 3rd party applications to Facebook was a good thing. I’m so tired of seeing profiles that take 5 minutes to scroll to the bottom due to the hundreds of applications. I suppose they are ok in moderation, but nobody uses them in moderation.

How about Cybernet’s “15 Biggest Tech Disappointments of 2007” list?

How ridiculous! Office 2007 is one of the best and most full-featured releases, not just from an interface point of view. I’m one of those users who knows the ins and outs of Office and yet I didn’t find re-learning so difficult. There’s a nice Quick Access Toolbar on the top in Ribbon apps where you can easily add ANY command in pre-Office 2007-style. I’m 100% sure those stupid editors only know basic stuff about Word/Excel/PowerPoint nothing more.

Wow Michael! I was surprised to see you use “Vista” and “solid” in the same sentence. :)

Yeah, this has ruined some of their credibility with me.

We’ll have something similar in our “CyberNet Awards” series that we’ve started.

The new My Yahoo! is pretty sweet though.

I didn’t see Yahoo on the list until you said that. WHY is Yahoo there? The new messenger versions are great, a little unstable, but both a-ok. I went back to 8.1 because I like the “classic skin” mode, not the special skins.

Vista is the worst Windows ever. Even worse than Millenium. It really deserves number one.

 :|  8O :) :? 8) :D   :P  ;) :o  :x :( :!: :?:
