Remember the Milk just became the task manager service on the Internet. If you’re running Gmail 2 in Firefox you can install the new Remember the Milk extension. It makes use of the heavily integrated Greasemonkey functionality that Google introduced in Gmail 2, and to be honest it is nothing short of amazing.
The Remember The Milk extension adds a sidebar located next to your Inbox. It does take up a reasonable amount of room, but it also makes managing your tasks sooooo easy! If it gets in the way you can just hit the little arrow to the left of your task list, and it will seemingly disappear for the time being.
After using this for only a few minutes I’m completely astonished with everything it has to offer. I had full control over adding, removing, and organizing the tasks that are displayed. To add a task you just have to type it into the text box, and here are some examples of the things it recognizes:
- Pick up the milk
- Call Lizzie at 9am tomorrow
- Return library books in 2 weeks
- Finish report, tag with work
To make things even easier Remember the Milk included a few options that can be found in your Gmail Settings -> Tasks section. There you’ll be able to choose if you want tasks to automatically be created for any email that your star or apply a specific label to.
This is going to be tremendously helpful in getting myself organized. I visit my Gmail Inbox all of the time, and having my task list displayed immediately next to it will ensure that I don’t forget about what needs to get done. I just installed RTM and received the following:

Wow, that’s amazingly well skinned into Gmail. From screenshot have no idea it’s a 3rd party’s app
The Settings > Task tab is something that comes with RTM Gmail extension.. and I have been having problems with accessing settings since Gmail2 came out..
Apparently they are fixing it as we speak.
Its a great tool though.. perfect!
This sounds great, but sadly RTM doesn’t work in Firefox 3 and the login has to be done through their website rather than storing it in Gmail. In addition I always find PC to do lists a bit crap anyway, as it means I have to be constantly checking my PC to see what to do next which is rubbish when out of the house.
Wow this is amazingly well done, integrates really well into gmail! Too bad Prism doesn’t support extensions yet, because I was using that for gmail (and rememberthemilk :P). I guess it’s back to using Flock for gmail.. (I like to keep it separated because Fx likes to crash on gmail for me)
I hope they will make it possible to resize the task list in the future - it’s quite a bit too small for me right now and affects readability of the tasks. Especially on a wide screen I don’t see why they wouldn’t make use of all that space.

Unfortunately I’m using an early colour screen phone that doesn’t even support looking at images, plus it costs me about 10p per minute to connect to the internet on my phone with pages loading about as fast as dial up. The UK definitely needs some better provision for mobiles and the internet.
I have, though, just found out that I can get GCal to send me texts and they seem to be free, so I’m thinking that some interesting combination of services could be what I need. Oh, and it works in Gmail now - despite RTM crashing in FF3 the logon has saved a cookie so it works through Gmail.
Ooh, a question - can I subdivide large tasks into smaller ones - I have work due for January but want to set deadlines for different parts over the next few weeks. Can it do that?
I’m not exactly sure what you mean, but you could create several separate tasks and tag them with the name of your project. Then you can create a virtual tab based on that tagname and voilà: an overview of the tasks for that project
If it’s just a one-off project, just creating an extra (temporary) tab for it is probably easier and doesn’t “dirty” your list of tags.
That’s my problem too. Now I need to figure out what to put in my list.
I’m using Firefox 3 nightlies, but I would have thought that it would work with Firefox 2. That’s rather weird otherwise.
That’s one of the things that I like the most about it. They did a tremendous job of making it fit in.
In some browsers I have problems accessing the settings in Gmail 2 as well. But generally it works good.
No, unfortunately it does not allow nested tasks. There are very few task lists out there that do allow this, and the ones that do typically have it poorly implemented. So I’ve always found myself going back to Remember the Milk.
