Chyrp: A WordPress Replacement?

January 4th, 2008

chryp There’s a new blogging engine on the block, and it’s simple and clean. It’s called Chyrp and it was designed to be light as far as weight is concerned, but still full of functionality. Could this engine end up moving in on WordPress’s territory? I think it’s possible, but it would definitely take some time before people felt confident enough to make the switch.

Alex Suraci is the creator of Chyrp and he explains that he started it back in 2004 when he got “fed up with all the bulky blogging engines.  WordPress was widely accepted as the leader of all blogging software, but it just wasn’t for me.” PHP and MySQL with some AJAX play an important role in the software, and there’s also a theme and module engine so that people can personalize all they’d like.

The first time I went to the homepage of Chyrp, I was happy to see a demo blog set-up so that I could see it in action. I was about to recommend that you go check out the demo,  however for the time being, most of it won’t work.  Apparently the Digg crowd got to it and started posting inappropriate material. Check back later though because I’m sure once everything settles down, the demo will be back and up and running in its full capacity.

For those of you who are thinking about starting your own personal blog, I’d say give Chryp a try and let us know what you think. It’s easier to work with than WordPress and while it is still a little buggy, it’s pretty solid. Play around with it and see if it’s something that would work for your needs.

    Hey Ashley, the link to Chyrp was spelled as Chryp (the second one/”homepage of Chyrp”). ;)

    @Ashley:

    I just took a look at this blogging platform but was not impressed at all. I think I’ll keep on using WordPress. They seem more professional and with a lot more features.

    Just my 2 cents on the blogging application.

    Regards,

    Omar.-

    WordPress is definitely more powerful and for those who already use it and are used to it, they probably won’t be interested in anything new. For those who are just starting a personal blog for fun, Chyrp might be nice for them simply because it is simple and it will be easier to get used to than WordPress.

    It looks nice, and is good to see competition to WordPress, but it seemed a little too “WordPress-but-with-this-cut-out” to me. Then again I’m hugely biased as my CMS will be released soon with full theme support etc. so I want people to use mine instead of this :P

    I can’t wait to see what the final product is like. Do you plan on including plugin support with your CMS?

:mrgreen: :| :twisted: :arrow: 8O :) :? 8) :evil: :D :idea: :oops: :P :roll: ;) :cry: :o :lol: :x :( :!: :?:
