Last week we kept you up-to-date on Mozilla’s progress for the Firefox 3 theme on both the Linux and Mac OS X platforms. Today we finally have a glimpse of what both XP and Vista will look like once the new icons are integrated into the browser. The mockups are posted above with the icons straight from the Iconfactory:
I had been curious how the “keyhole” back/forward button design would actually look, but I think it fits in quite well on both operating systems. I’m still a little skeptical about the green buttons on XP, but it’s hard to judge when you aren’t looking at the overall browser.
You can expect to see the new icons integrated into the nightly builds soon. I’m sure you’re wondering what some of the other ones look like, and so I present you with the main set of icons in their various states:
Note: I believe the order from top to bottom is: normal, hovering, disabled, and clicking on the icon.

Are the key-hole buttons optional? I really don’t like the look of it, it reminds me too much of Internet Explorer. The green is horrible. I think I’ll stick to the old buttons.
I don’t like the Vista themes (current or future) they look like they were done by 5-year old. Or they look like something you would see on dial-up when only part on image has loaded.
Yikes….can we keep FF 2.0 themes?
Looks like another unimpressive Fx theme.
Shaping up nicely, but I have to admit that the XP icons look a bit better than the Vista ones, like for instance the ‘Refresh’ and ‘Stop’ buttons.
The Vista icons look like they are ‘faded, as if someone must have left them in direct sunlight.
8O, if that’s the price to pay for having a “native” theme, I prefer current Firefox theme, thank you, those look terrible to me. The icons alone look nice, but in the program… ouch
Ugh, no thanks. I’m running the latest Minefield nightly right now and the current icons are a lot better than these mockups. The forward/back/stop buttons are basically equal. The current (nightly) home button has more-detail and subtle shading that gives it more depth and a higher look of quality, compared with the mockup which is too plain and cartoony. The new reload button looks AWFUL compared with what’s currently on the nightly, which is beautiful and blends well with the other buttons. The mockup print button also looks really bad compared to the nightly.
If this mockup becomes the real deal in Firefox 3.0, I’ll be faced with constantly replacing it with something better on every system I install FF3 on. Not ideal. While I’m not wedded to the current theme and don’t mind improvement, I don’t approve of change for the sake of change. The current nightly theme is exponentially better than this proposal.
I wonder how the linux look will shape up. i hope its not as ugly as these ones.
I don’t think it will be optional because they’ve been talking about having something unique in the browser that would really make people “notice” Firefox.
Well, the future one is still up in there air as this is only a screenshot with the new icons. It’s possible that they’ll change things around more so that they’ll fit in better.
I doubt it since they’ve never offered older themes before, but someone will inevitably make a theme with all of the old icons and colors.
It definitely shouldn’t be. They are still sticking with the standard GTK icons to ensure that it fits into the operating system.
I typically don’t change from the default theme either, and it would be annoying to have something that doesn’t look as nice as it should. Hopefully when the whole browser gets put together it will look better.
I think these look great - it’s different from the bland old interface. Good work to the people that worked hard on this stuff. Incidentally, for the very vocal types that don’t like them - that’s your call, but really, who cares what the interface looks like “out of the box” - In case you weren’t aware, the browser does support skins… check it out, it really is pretty cool.
The way the XP unified backward/forward button looks like makes me glad I am a Linux user. Not to be mean, but the whole unified backward/forward button looks a lot better in Vista. (even if its IE7-like)
I am currently using the second beta on Linux, and I love how it integrates into Linux (but it may put a limit on what icon themes I use, depending on how well they integrate into Firefox).
Overall, I’d rather use Firefox 3 on OS X than any OS, the Safari-like theme is awesome.
Hmmm… I don’t really care for this proposed change. I guess I can live with it as long as I can find a theme that I like, but I do like having a more functional theme and the Vista/IE7 type look has never impressed me. I guess time will tell the full story, until then I will just wait and see.
I just think that many people prefer not to hassle with changing themes. I used to have custom themes, but lately I’ve just stuck with the defaults.
I actually like how Microsoft does the IE7 theme in Vista with the extra transparency, but I’m skeptical as to whether Mozilla would get to doing something like that.
I just installed the latest nightly and I am already seeing the changes rolling into FF3. So far it seems fine, but I am sure there are more changes to come. Oh well, if we don’t like it we can always update our theme, that’s the great part of FF.
At this point there’s no way that I would go back to Firefox 2 mostly because the performance has gotten a lot better. The theme is just a minor part of Firefox because, as you mentioned, it can easily be changed. So that is the least of my concerns as well, but it can make a big difference on attracting new users.
I just want to say that I just got the new forward/back buttons on my nightly of FF3 and I have to say that I’m in love with it. I love how unique it is and I love that the whole style and function of the new buttons. Keep it up Mozilla!!!!
Moreover, it integrates better to Vista, for these buttons resemlbe to the Media Player, Explorer buttons. Actually I’ve made quite similar ones for my customized skin - just stole from the Explorer
There’s a couple of oddities on these in Ubuntu…
1: The Stop icon is just an X, not the outline-stop-sign pictured.
2: The menu titles disappear when you hover over them.
Anyone have a fix for the latter?
The only time I’ve heard about the menu titles disappearing when you hover over them is when people were using an incompatible theme. Are you using the default Firefox 3 theme in Ubuntu?
What happen to all the cool themes, I cant find any for Firefox 3, Please email me and tell me were I can find themes that work with this version asap sincerely, Cheri
It will take a little while for the theme developers to get around to updating them. So you just have to be patient.
