Qtrax Offers Free Music Downloads… Hopefully!

We all know people like free music and this was proven a few days ago when Last.fm launched their free on-demand streaming music service (with limits, of course).  They saw a HUGE spike in listeners, page views, and unique visitors shortly after it launched.  Knowing how much people love free music, it is then easy to understand why there has been so much hype surrounding a new start-up called Qtrax.  Qtrax uses the words "free" and "music" quite a bit on their site to describe "the worlds first, 100% legal and free Peer-2-Peer music application." They were set to launch last night at midnight and early reports were praising the service to no end, especially since they said they had all 4 major record labels on board and more than 25 million songs to choose from.  All of the praises started to come to an end once people found out the real details...

CyberNotes: Skip Commercials in Windows Media Center

We've been using the Windows Vista Media Center as our primary way to record shows for about a year now, and our experience has been really good. It's a lot like Tivo, but one thing that really makes me love the Vista Media Center is its extensibility. Yes, third-party developers can create awesome apps that leverage off of your Media Center's capabilities.

Lock Computer with USB Drive

USB drives serve a lot of purposes, but few people know that you can turn an average USB drive into a security feature with very little work. Using a free piece of software called USB PC Lock Pro you can have your computer automatically lock itself the moment you step away, and all you have to do is remove the USB drive.

CyberNotes: Listen to Music for Free, No Strings Attached!

A few days ago we wrote about Last.fm's new service and how nice it is that users can listen to music for free. There are a few limitations though, and one of them is that you can only listen to a song three times for free before being required to subscribe.

Helpful Tip: One-Click "Ignore All" Solution for Facebook Apps

Ever since Facebook apps launched, one of my biggest pet-peeves has been all of the darn app requests I receive.  It's annoying to say the least, and the worst part about it all is that there is no easy way to ignore them all with one click.  For each individual request, I must click "ignore" over and over again.

Macworld put 2 and 2 together today to figure out that there are over 1 million iPhones that are unaccounted for from Apple's numbers. Earlier Apple said that 3.7 million iPhones were sold in 2007 during the first 6 months it was available. AT&T on the other hand, said that they have a little under two million iPhone customers.

There has been all kinds of buzz around the Internet in the last week regarding Windows 7. It started when a roadmap of the Windows 7 release cycle was leaked revealing that Microsoft's intentions are to ship the operating system in 2009, instead of the previous 2010 estimation that was announced.

Best Buy Memo Indicates 80GB PS3 is Going Closeout

PS3 Fanboy received an interesting scan of an internal letter coming from Best Buy that explains that the 80GB  Playstation 3 is going closeout.  This means that there will be no new shipments, once their current stock of 80GB systems is gone, that's it. The memo states:

Mobile Firefox Mockups

We've known for a little while that Mozilla had plans to design a mobile browser, and now we are getting some insight as to where they are headed with it. As it turns out they are actually designing two different mobile versions, one for touch screen devices (iPhone-style) and another for smaller screens (like cellphones).

Ever since laser mice became popular, the need to use a mouse pad went out the door. Or did it? Back in August, CyberNet Forum Member xpgeek asked whether people used a mouse pad, and if so, what kind.

1-Year Vista Vulnerability Analysis

Jeff Jones, the Security Strategy Director for Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing group, has assembled a 1-year analysis of Vista's vulnerabilities. In his 6-month review Vista came out on top when pitted up against other operating systems, and stretching the timeline out over a 1-year period didn't yield any different results.

Yahoo to Sell DRM-Free Music Soon?

The latest forming trend in digital music downloads seems to be that everyone wants to start offering DRM-free music.  Both Amazon and iTunes offer a DRM-free catalog of music as well as several other sites like eMusic. People like DRM-free because it means once they download a song or album, they can play the song on multiple devices. When Amazon's service launched, it got rave reviews.

Real Windows 7 Screenshots?

In our last post just the other day we mentioned a Neowin forum member who had claimed to get his hands on Windows 7 Milestone 1. He walked through some of the things that he had noticed so far in the first milestone, but it wasn't much. It was generally the same thing as Vista, and without the screenshots to back it up people were skeptical of the legitimacy.
