CyberNotes: Rotate Your Screen Orientation

Whenever I'm at home I hookup my laptop to a secondary 24" monitor to drastically increase the amount of screen space available to me. When I'm working on programming projects I will rotate my monitor so that it is oriented vertically (a.k.a. portrait mode), which I think is something most programmers do when they have widescreen monitors.

eBay Strike Drops Number of Listings by 3%

A proposed boycott on eBay listings went into effect on Monday, and since then the number of listings on the site dropped from around 14.5 million down to 14 million. That comes out to a 3% drop overall, which isn't quite as high as the strikers would have liked to see.

Multiplayer Games Coming to Microsoft Zune

One of the features on Microsoft's Zune that users have praised is the capability to wirelessly sync files and share music. Up until this point, that's really all that the wireless was used for but now news is starting to unfold that Microsoft will be utilizing the wireless for games.

The Future of Technology

One of the things that I was pretty disappointed with at CES this year was Microsoft's "future" segment. It's where they often give us a glimpse of what to expect 10 or 15 years from now, and when watching it I normally find myself giggling like a little kid in a candy store. This year they really didn't put much thought into it.

Web Hosting: 1998 Vs. Now

Web hosting is a big industry these days with so many people and businesses running sites of their own. Royal, which is Pingdom's official blog, recently took a look at web hosting now versus 10 years ago. It's actually amazing to see the changes in storage space offered, and the increases in data transfer between then and now.

Windows XP SP3 (RC 2) Download on Windows Update

I had been wondering whether Windows XP SP3 got lost somewhere in the Microsoft abyss, but it looks like it is alive and kicking after all. Microsoft slowly but surely rolled out Release Candidate 2 yesterday, which is available for download via Windows Update.

CyberNotes: Customize Firefox Sidebars

One of the areas that I've always felt Firefox has lacked in is sidebar configurability. Other browsers, such as Opera, come with way more sidebar options out-of-the-box making it easy to throw a sidebar onto any side of the browser. The beauty of Firefox, however, is that there are plenty of extensions to solve any complaints.

And You Thought You Were a Music Addict…

I'm sure some of you are truly music addicts with thousands of songs being lugged around on your music player. You might even have a few hundred CD's, or maybe you've broken into the thousands by now. I hate to burst your bubble, but you don't have the world's largest collection.

Is Microsoft’s WorldWide Telescope "it"?

Several days ago we wrote about something extraordinary that Robert Scoble said was coming from Microsoft and it was going to be announced on February 27th. When he saw a live demo of it at a recent visit to Redmond, he said it was enough to make his eyes well up with tears.

Incompatible Vista SP1 Programs

Microsoft has posted a support article regarding some applications that have been found not to work when a Vista computer is upgraded to Vista SP1. The list is pretty small at this point, but an update like this isn't expected to break as many apps like XP SP2 did.

Mozilla Messaging Touches on Thunderbird 3

Back in September 2007 Mozilla decided to break their email client, called Thunderbird, away from the browser and create a separate subsidiary for it. Up until now the new subsidiary has been called MailCo, but today it officially received the name of Mozilla Messaging.

Verizon’s Unlimited Calling Plans Fall Short

Verizon Wireless just launched their unlimited calling plans in the United States starting at $99.99 where subscribers pay one flat rate to place and receive unlimited calls.  All in all, it's not THAT great of a deal, but there are some benefits to what they are offering. Below is the graph which outlines the three unlimited plans available and the prices for each:

CyberNotes: Using Gmail Filters

One of the reasons that I love Gmail the most is the remarkably powerful filter system that is integrated into it. With the filtering system you can analyze emails as they hit your Inbox, and then perform certain actions on them. If you spend the time to setup quality filters it can almost be like having your own personal secretary to sift through emails, but it's a lot cheaper. ;)

Best Buy Loses Computer, Woman Files $54 Million Lawsuit

If you were to take your computer to a repair shop and they ended up losing it, what would you say is fair compensation? I'd say at least the amount it cost to purchase the laptop in the first place, and then maybe a little extra to cover the hassle and time it took to get it replaced would be fair.

Vista SP1 vs. XP SP2 Performance Tests

Now that Vista SP1 has been released there's no surprise that performance tests and benchmarks are going to start flooding the Internet, and not surprisingly XP takes the crown in most of the cases. ZDNet has gotten the ball rolling (here and here) with their test results:

Firefox 3 Add-ons Website Preview

In the coming months Mozilla will be shipping the Firefox 3 browser, and with that comes a redesigned add-ons site. A preview of the new add-ons site is currently available, and I have to say that it is head over heels better than the current site. Things like the search box really stand out, and search results are laid out in a more friendly format.
