I was starting to become skeptical as to whether it was possible to have an Aero Glass theme for Firefox much like that of Internet Explorer 7, but there is now proof that it can be done. One top-notch developer took it upon himself to create an extension that would create a fancy eye-catching interface for Firefox 3. The result is the Glasser extension.
As you can see in the screenshot above it looks rather sharp on a machine running Vista with Aero Glass enabled. Honestly, this is more like what I was expecting the Vista theme to look like in Firefox 3, but Mozilla didn’t go that route.
The extension is still in the early stages, but seems to work pretty well. If you want to give it a whirl you’ll need to be running Firefox 3 (currently in Beta), and here is the info you need to get the extension going:
Download: Glasser Installer (XPI)
To install Glasser, first download the file, then drag and drop it to your Firefox window. If you want the Windows Explorer, Windows Media Player, or Windows Mail style background on the personal toolbar, download GlasserExtras.zip. You can install the CSS files with either the Stylish Add-on, or by edit your userChrome.css file.
If you want to remove the menu-bar, try either Personal Menu or Hide Menubar. Both support using the Alt key to temperately show the menu-bar and Personal Menu lets you keep a button on the toolbar to gain access to the menus.
I really hope that the developer continues to work on the extension, and possibly bundle options with it such as hiding the Menu bar. Out of curiosity I would love to hear whether you think this is better than the current Vista theme for Firefox 3. Drop off your comments below.

well it’s pretty good. really good and so far looks well suited on the Browser .. although i feel that the combined back and forward button is a little depressed! or it’s just me?
all in all best one so far
i like it, and upon further investigation of stylish (since i hadn’t looked into or used it before) i found a script that gets rid of that light fuzz behind the menu bar just in case you don’t want to hide it. i take no credit for the script, except for passing it along here. http://userstyles.org/styles/6588
note: in the short time since i’ve completed installation of the glass.xpi, stylish, personal menu, the 4 css styles from the zip file and the style i posted earlier….i’ve had 4 Firefox Crashes. this is notable because i have probably had less than 4 crashes since installing beta 5 the day it was released.
Microsoft C++ Runtime Error
R6025
- Pure Virtual Function Call
and then boom! all gone.
not sure where the problem is…will wait for next crash and then start removing things to see where it goes. will keep you up to date though.
system specs: dual core 2.8, 4 gig ram, geforce 7600gt 256 mb ddr3, windows vista ultimate 32 bit, FF 3.0 beta 5
Awesome! Just what I wanted for firefox.
I think it is supposed to look that way.
Interesting, it hasn’t crashed on me yet. It could be conflicting with another extension? Maybe that other script you mentioned might be causing issues?
it crashed once more today but i’ve decided to leave it alone for now. i run a very bare bones ff right now. i do have a few though:
R.I.P.
Smart Bookmarks Bar
FireGestures
Locationbar(2)
as for what i mentioned before, that was a ’style’. i’m not too familiar with stylish and called it a script instead of a style but it looks like it was created to compliment the vista aero glass.
It’s better. MUCH better, I wonder why they said that no one wanted to design new native themes for the Windows versions, clearly they asked in the wrong places. And it’s a shame the development of Firefox 3 is so advanced right now, it means there’s no possibility of shipping this theme as the default for Vista.
Maybe tomorrow some skilled fella comes up with something equally impressive for XP
Eh… I almost always use my browser maximized or in full screen mode, so no real use for an Aero Glass theme as far as I’m concerned.
I was really disappointed that something like this wasn’t going to make it into the final edition as well. Maybe next time they’ll realize that the community might not be such a bad source of inspiration and creativity.
I used to do that as well, but lately I’ve found myself tiling it with some other windows which is easier than switching between apps. It really just depends on the resolution of the monitor that you’re working with.
