About a month ago we took a look at how each of the consoles were still stacking up to each other in the U.S., and not surprisingly Nintendo was widely outselling the competition in both the handheld and console gaming markets. As March rolled on nothing much changed, except that Nintendo sold about 300,000 more Wii’s than the previous month:
- Nintendo Wii - 721,000 units
- Nintendo DS - 698,000 units
- Sony PSP - 297,000 units
- Microsoft Xbox 360 - 262,000 units
- PlayStation 3 - 257,000 units
- PlayStation 2 - 216,000 units
From what I hear the Wii consoles can still be quite a challenge to find stocked in stores, which means Nintendo has to be pulling in some good money. Last month the Wii didn’t have many of the top selling games which led many (including myself) to believe that consumers were content with having just the Wii Sports that the console ships with. Well, that may not be the case because Nintendo definitely knocked one out of the park with the Super Mash Brothers Brawl game:
- [Wii] Super Smash Bros: Brawl - 2.7 million units
- [Xbox 360] Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 - 752,300 units
- [Xbox 360] Army of Two - 606,100 units
- [Wii] Wii Play - 409,000 units
- [PSP] God of War: Chains of Olympus - 301,600 units
- [Wii] Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock - 264,000 units
- [Xbox 360] MLB 2K8 - 237,100 units
- [Xbox 360] Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - 237,000 units
- [PS3] Army of Two - 224,900 units
And you know that April’s stats are going to be along the same lines because the long awaited Mario Kart for the Wii will be released on April 27th. Despite being released near the end of the month I think we can expect to see Mario Kart top the charts for April.

And Mario Kart Wii comes out in just a few days!
And I do believe they are going to keep their streak going on May 21 (in Candada - don’t know about the US) with Wii Fit. I’ve already reserved my copy at Toys R Us.
I would like to see how the Wii stacks up with Wii Fit (which is slated to sell well) with GTA IV coming out in a week.
They still seem to be hard to keep in stock. I was at Target the other night and noticed a sign at the electronics counter announcing The Wii is currently Out of Stock.
I am pretty excited about Mario Kart coming out for the Wii!
I still know several people who still can’t seem to get their hands on a Wii. There’s definitely still the demand there.
Completely forgot about that! Man, they are going to be raking in the money.
Given that it is nearly the same time as Mario Kart I would suspect that they will still do quite well.
And here I was thinking they’d be lowering the prices around this time. Oh well. The Wii is the cheapest, most innovative game console on the market. I’ve been a Nintendo fan for a while, and they really earned the victory this time around. I hope the new Mario Kart impresses. One thing I really like about Nintendo is they have the familiar characters like Mario, Link, Bowser… and that should help w/ Mario Kart.
Also, the controller is just so remarkable, I’ve been thinking about getting one just to play around with on the PC.
I thought that a price drop would be coming as well, but I also wasn’t expecting the demand to still be so high. PS3’s are still easy to find, but these things are still sold out in a lot of the stores that I visit.
