Are you Saving or Spending the Rebate Check?

April 25th, 2008

rebate check.pngGeeks are sometimes given the stereotype as being big spenders on gadgetry, from computers to video game systems. You, yourself, may be a spender. While some do always have to have the latest and greatest of anything electronic, not all geeks are frequently forking out the cash.

Now that most people living in the United States will be receiving a refund check from the government within the next month or so, a survey was done to see what people would be doing with the money. NPD Group conducted one such survey and even though “geeks” could easily go out and spend the $600 or $1200 on a new computer or a sleek TV, what they found is that people will actually be saving the money.

Maybe geeks won’t be spending because they already own the latest and greatest (haha) and nothing enticing has come out? Or maybe it’s because those who follow technology trends aren’t as big of spenders as everybody thought? Regardless, the bottom line from a PC Magazine article says that geeks are planing to save the money they receive from their tax rebate and not spend it.

If you’re getting a rebate check, what is it that you plan to do with the extra cash?

I would like to save mine, but will be forced to spend it though. But that won’t help our economy as I am planning on spending it on my month long vacation to India. :)

Being a highschooler, I don’t deal with taxes all that much…so yeah.

Regardless, I tend to be a little behind technology wise, since I don’t really need high end things to do what I need to do.
But for manga/comics and video games, I tend to spend a lot…

    All the best Mark

As for my check, I can’t say for sure yet, but I may be the proud new owner of a PS3 come next month.

Well I guess we can dream, but I’d like too think you could try and hold onto it. If you have a car, the price of gas will start to eat away at it quickly. If you don’t have a car the price of food will be chipping away at it. One commodity or the other will get this “Money”, back into the economy. But it will be cute too look at and hold onto for a little while. That’s just the way it is, because it’s really not “that much after all”.

Haven’t even given much thought about it. Looks like I won’t get mine until sometime around the end of May beginning on June. There is a digital camera I’ve been wanting to get for the past year. But, I doubt I’ll get it simply because the only time I used my other one was when I traveled and don’t do much of that any more.

I’ll be spending mine, but do not know what I am going to put it toward. Could use it toward my bicycling trip to Colorado in August. Could buy the POV.1 camera for use when cycling, http://www.vio-pov.com. Or I may just pay off a bill.

Will put the check towards the purchase of a laptop for my fiancée which she wants to carry back and forth between work and home to study English.

My wife and I will be spending ours to pay off some debt. Not as cool as new tech toys, but in the long run it’s the way to go.

I’m not getting one and neither is my wife.
Evidentially if you pay more taxes you get nothing.

Decisions, decisions! There’s always something to spend money on, isn’t there?

I don’t think you’re alone here. Putting it towards debt is not a bad idea at all…

I’m not quite sure how it works but I know that you’re not able to get a check if you make over a certain amount (maybe $150,000 combined income?)but you also can’t get the full amount if you haven’t put enough in to taxes. Apparently we didn’t put enough in because we’ll be getting $300 per person (so $600 total) instead of $600 per person or $1200 total.

The whole stimulus rebate check is a joke. I am married with two children, so therefore, we were expecting $1800 (because we make under $150,000 combined). I guess I should of thought twice about us really getting $1800. We will only get $1200 because we were limited to the amount of the 2007 Net Income Tax Liability. We received too many tax credits on student loans, daycare, and our home loan when filing our 2007 tax refund. Due to us getting those tax breaks we end up getting a less than expected $1800 rebate check. Basically the government is taking back what they previously credited us. They always find a loop hole. Nothing like screwing the middle class once again!!!!!! We are the ones who need the money because we do have home loans, school loans, child care exspenses!!!!!! Maybe we would of like to buy a FLAT SCREEN TV! No we will be using the less than expected check on GAS, FOOD, UTILITIES. Maybe the extra $600 could of been spent on a TV!

 :|  8O :) :? 8) :D   :P  ;) :o  :x :( :!: :?:
