StarBurn: Free Disc Burning Software

One thing that we really love is free CD/DVD/Blu-ray burning software. You could always purchase tools like Nero to get the job done, but it’s just become so darn bloated that I can hardly bring myself to installing it anymore. Plus many of the free alternatives are actually quite nice.

We’d like to add one more to our list of favorite CD/DVD/Blu-ray burning software, and it’s called StarBurn. It does all of the typical things you would expect of the software, but also includes some features that go above and beyond. My favorite thing would be the fact that you can actually mount a disc image or ISO file from within the app, which gives you the chance to test out an ISO before you go through the trouble of burning it. Or maybe it would keep you from having to burn it in the first place, which could salvage some discs. To use this feature just click the StarPort button located on the toolbar.

StarBurn should work fine on your computer if you’re running either 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Windows XP/2003/Vista. It’s definitely worth checking out!

Tip: Watch out when going through the installation process as it will have a couple of checkboxes that will change your browser’s default search engine and homepage. So don’t blindly keep clicking the “Next” button during setup otherwise you’ll probably miss them.

Did you find out about StarBurn when I mentioned it the last time you reviewed free burning applications? It really is a cool program. You should keep an eye out on http://www.giveawayoftheday.com because I have seen them offer the full blown network version for free on a fairly regular basis. It seems every time an update comes out it is offered for free. Still the free version is quite nice.

BTW, for those worried about not being able to install it after the Giveaway is done, just run Process Explorer http://technet.microsoft.com/e.....96653.aspx and look for the tmp file that is created under the setup.exe program and make a copy of this file for later use renaming it as an exe file since this is the actual installer file minus the checking that is usually done when you run the file downloaded from GOTD. In this way you should in most instances be able to reinstall the software if anything goes wrong with your computer. This has worked for me on many applications they offer.

It didn’t actually catch my eye until I saw it on Download Squad, and they mentioned how it included the ISO mounter. That’s a really useful tool for a CD/DVD burning app to have.

One of the things that I hated the most with GOTD is not being able to reinstall an app later on, and that’s a pretty slick idea you came up with. I may just have to give that a whirl.
