Microsoft Office is a powerhouse suite, and it does of course include templates for the various applications. What it doesn’t really have, however, are templates that tie together the different apps within the suite. It looks as though Microsoft may have realized this pitfall, and so they posted six very nice (and free) designer templates that each come in nine different color schemes.

The best part about this is that each design has templates for presentations, spreadsheets, invoices, letterheads, business cards, email blasts, and newsletters. Just go to this site, select the design from the thumbnails along the top, choose a color at the bottom, and click download. What you’ll get is a ZIP file that contains all of the templates, and they’ll work with Office 2007. Most of the templates will also open in Mac Office 2008, except for those designed for Publisher.

So if you’re using Microsoft Office 2007 or Office 2008 you should definitely go checkout these free designer templates. They can bring a whole new sense of professionalism to your documents and presentations. Plus these are templates that people have probably never seen before, and they might think that you had them custom designed. ;)

Some of these themes look really nice… but how do you “install” them? I downloaded about a dozen of the zip files to my desktop. If I unzip them there, how will the various office programs find them? To say nothing of the junked up desktop I would end up with. I read the instructions for use, but they were of no help.

Just open your Word,Powerpoint,Excel or Publish, click Design tab,in the themes group, click more. Then navigate to the folder you just downloaded, and choose the new theme.

I extracted the themes to a “downloads” location on my hard drive. I was able to browse to and use the themes in PowerPoint…but, the themes do not show up in the themes gallery once PowerPoint has been closed. I need to browse to the download location each time I start a new PowerPoint project.

Is there a way to place the themes in the location of the built in themes so that they show up in the themes gallery? What would that location be? Would the locations be different for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher? If so, what are those locations for a standard installation of Office 2007?

Thanks very much for the help.

I don’t think there is any way that you can add this to the templates gallery. Microsoft has the templates gallery organized according to the type, and so they probably wouldn’t let you add custom templates to it very easily. The closest thing you’ll be able to do is browse for them as custom templates, as stated in the instructions.
