Firefox Add-ons Site Gets Advanced Search

Back in March 2008 Mozilla launched a redesign of their add-ons site that serves as a home to thousands of extensions and themes for their applications. The biggest thing the new design lacked (and has lacked for well over a year) is the ability to perform an advanced search. The reason why this is so important to me is that I often go there to search for extensions, and previously you couldn’t choose how you wanted the results to be sorted. Options like this were only available when browsing for extensions, and not when performing a search presumably because of performance limitations.

That’s a thing of the past now. The new add-ons site has full advanced search capabilities! Underneath the search box you should see the “Advanced” tab hanging down. If you go ahead and expand that you should see a bunch of advanced search options (pictured above) that you can choose from. Not only can you now sort search results , but you can also filter them according to which version of Firefox they work with! Finding add-ons that are compatible with Firefox 3.0 is no longer a pain in the butt.

The other big news is that Mozilla revamped the interface for browsing through themes on the site. Now it tiles thumbnails of the themes on the page so that you can quickly scan through looking for your favorites, but the bad news is that this layout is not available when performing a search for themes. If you’re just perusing through the different theme categories it should be pretty helpful though.

It’s hard to believe that the release of Firefox 3 is already coming tomorrow. Seems like just yesterday I was playing around with the Alpha releases. ;)

My sentiments exactly. I’m still shocked that they didn’t do this sooner, but at least it’s here now.

Woohoo, finally! Very useful :) Looks squished into the existing layout, but better than nothing for sure! It’s a pity that you cannot turn your search into a customized RSS feed though :P
