With the spectacular growth of mobile phone users everywhere, the traditional e-mail is being challenged by IM (Instant Messages) and Mobile Phone Chat (Text Messages).

I’ve seen many teens raising their eyebrows in disbelief when an adult mentions the word “e-mail”. For many of them this is a dinosaur compared to IM and Phone Chat. They say e-mail is for “old people”.

I prefer the traditional e-mail since I’m allergic to cell phones. :)

I agree, but email still is a must for me. Mobile phones and PDAs can only assist but not substitute email. IM can help sometimes, but I cannot rely on it for business use. On my work account I get around 150-200 messages daily, my private mail gets about 5-20 mails per day (fun mails not counted).

I assumed I had to take both business and personal email into account, so I voted 51-100. More and I’d go absolutely nuts :P I already have trouble to work my way through that amount, how do people deal with more properly?!

I agree with NetFlexx that IM/SMS can help/assist, but is not substitute of email. Especially for business use, but also in many cases personal use.

What if the phone had been invented AFTER e-mail? Would we have marveled at how awesome it was to actually have the chance to TALK with someone?

For me it wasn’t until just a few months ago that I actually started using text messages on my phone. And I used to be an instant-messenger freak, but that fad has since worn off. The convenience of being able to respond to an email is the main reason I still use email. Plus text messages are actually limited to how many characters can be sent, and so it’s not convenient for longer messages. Between my personal inbox and our site email I get between 50 and 100 emails a day.

Interesting point Katybeth! I hadn’t thought about that but I’m sure if the phone had been invented after email, we certainly would have marveled at the convenience of being able to hear someone’s voice without being in person.
