New iGoogle Starts Rolling Out

We reported a few months ago about how Google was adding a new social spin to iGoogle by offering a Facebook-style update module. It appears that Google has already put the new system through its paces, and has begun the rollout process that will continue over the next month or so. Garett Rogers over at Googling Google appears to be one of the few people I’ve heard about who’s already received the revamped homepage.

As you can see in the screenshots above there are some rather notable things that are included in this update. The first thing would be the tab bar that has moved from the top of the page to the left side. Each gadget appears as a sub-list for a particular tab, and clicking on one of them would expand the gadget to fill the entire page (assuming the developer has included the code needed to do that). The screenshot on the left shows how something like that would be useful when reading feeds.

Also in the bottom half of the sidebar are all of your Google Talk buddies. This is reminiscent of Gmail where clicking on a contact would bring up a chat window inside your browser. Having it integrated into iGoogle right off the bat is sure to draw even more attention to Google Talk.

So go checkout your iGoogle page, and let us know if you’ve received the new look yet. Remember, a lot of your gadgets probably won’t be able to take advantage of the new features since they’ll need to be updated by developers first.
