Firefox 3 has had nearly two weeks to work its way onto computers around the world, and the most recent numbers according to Spread Firefox say that there have been over 26 million downloads of the browser. Prior to the launch of Firefox 3 Mozilla said that they had 20 million active Firefox users, which probably means that a lot of people have downloaded Firefox 3 multiple times. There are currently 160 million active Firefox users.
Net Applications was kind enough to provide hourly stats for Firefox 3’s market share, and they did it for one full week after its release. What’s interesting is that Mozilla received 8 million downloads in the first day, and more than doubled that number within a week after its launched. The market share stats, however, seems to tell a different story as the usage remained steady over the first week:
Firefox 3 Hourly Market Share % from 6/17 to 6/24

You’ll also notice that Europe is leading the charge in using Firefox 3, and the North America usage falls just below the worldwide average.
Download Squad’s inquiring minds wanted to know what the operating system breakdown was for the downloads, and Mozilla didn’t have any troubles turning over that information to them. Windows users accounted for 79% of the downloads, Linux 13%, and Mac OS X 8%. Mac OS X beats out Linux in terms of operating system market share, but when it came to Firefox 3 downloads the numbers were reversed. I’m guessing that means many Mac users are content with Safari?

FireFox 3 sucks, uninstalled it today and went back to v2, the new Font Rendering Engine is completely horrible the fonts are all whacked and change when the page refreshes, and no it’s not the website! Hopefully they fix this HUGE BUG Soon.
Odd…been using V3 for maybe a week and haven’t notices anything unusual.

From the article: 50 Million DAILY active users in January. You’re 20 million seems a little out of date. I bet most people don’t even use their computer every day.
http://www.betanews.com/articl.....1196713676
125 million active users for 2007. (My last post had the DAILY count)
The spikes are interesting too. I suppose many more people use Firefox at home than at work. The difference looks like 3% more at home, which is close to a 40% growth.
I haven’t ran into any bug like that and I have been using FF 3 since Alpha 4. I am the opposite it’s hard for me to go back to FF 2 now that I have used FF 3.
I dont know about mac users, but for linux users FF is THE browser. Many Distro’s include it as a default. What would be interesting is the percentage among Linux users who use Firefox. Would be close to 80% i guess.
Yes, this is an issue. I encounter it VERY often when I try to view a comment page or leave a comment on any Blogger blog.
Huh, haven’t noticed a font problem here.
A little more searching and I found an article from June that said they have 60 million daily users. I could have sworn that I saw the 20 million number on a Mozilla blog or on the World Record site recently.
That does look like the case… even on a global basis. The Europe and North America daily peaks are nicely shifted to demonstrated the time difference.
I would guess it’s at least 80% since Ubuntu comes with it, and that’s the dominant distribution right now.
“The Firefox community is the proud new owner of a Guinness World Record — each and every one of you! Mozilla today received confirmation from Guinness World Records that we’ve officially achieved the record for the “largest number of software downloads in 24 hours.” From 18:16 UTC on June 17, 2008 to 18:16 UTC on June 18, 2008, 8,002,530 people downloaded Firefox 3!
This is another wonderful accomplishment in a long line of them for our community! Ever since Firefox was launched in 2004 we’ve relied on our community to help us spread the word, and thanks to projects including crop circles, newspaper ads, giant stickers, videos, blogs and more we now have over 180 million users in more than 230 countries. Incredible work!”
From my update on the record. 180 million users is the official number now.
The Spread Firefox World Record site says 160 million… did they change it or did you get that quote from somewhere else?
July 29 Had Firefox on for two days. Bookmarks deleted keep returning when browser is restarted. One time all bookmarks disappeared. The new sqlite files are way larger than the old dat files. If you wipe the history(they call it places now, you lose all bookmarks.) The urlclassifier sqlite files keep bloating daily. More trouble than it is worth. Went back to Firefox 2 today. It is like a breath of fresh air. Sorry they screwed up a good thing.
Never had any bookmarks problems, that’s odd. Did you find other users with that problem? Don’t have an extension installed that deals with bookmarks?
The urlclassifier is actually only for information regarding fishing filters. If you have a problem with it, you can disable it. See this article: http://ychittaranjan.wordpress.....firefox-3/
