Microsoft Experiments with New Live Search Homepage

There are a variety of tactics that search engines can use to draw people in, and it looks as though Microsoft's tactic with Live Search is to throw up a nature scene of someone in a canoe, add some hotspots, and then hope people are intrigued enough to stay for a while. Below is a screenshot of what the Live Search homepage looks like while hovering over one of the "hotspots":

Del.icio.us 2.0: It took a Year, but it’s Here

The famed social bookmarking service Delicious uncovered a new design today that is supposed to be faster, include more powerful searching, and be flat out easier on the eyes. Sound exciting? Well, we first got a glimpse of the new design nearly a year ago, but there were some bumps in the road that kept them from getting it released.

Is Twitter Becoming a News-Wire?

Twitter is one of those services I just can't make up my mind about. On one hand it provides a simple and quick way to get information about what's going out there whether it be updates from friends or news from my favorite sites.

Quickly Turn Aero Transparency on and off in Vista

I think Microsoft did a great job with the Aero transparency interface in Vista, but there might be times were you'd want to turn it off. Maybe you're trying to take a screenshot and don't want to include the contents seen through the window? The normal process that you would have to go through takes several clicks of the mouse:

SocialHistory JavaScript Determines What Sites You’ve Visited

One piece of information a lot of places are clamoring to get their hands on is what other websites their visitors are viewing. By having access to this information they would be able to determine what social networks you use, what search engine you prefer, and more.

Cuil Randomly Places Images Alongside Search Results

Earlier today when we saw Google Blogoscoped point out some of the issues that search engine Cuil was having with placing random images of people next to searches for popular people like Bill Clinton and Eric Schmidt (they display a photo of Steve Ballmer next to him, is that not funny?), we thought we'd see what kinds of problems Cuil had with products, services, and companies.

Dell Will Try to Compete with the iPod, Again…

Some of you may remember when Dell attempted make a name for themselves in the digital music player market by launching a couple of different music players in 2003. And you may remember that in 2006 they decided to end production of both their hard drive and flash-based players because they simply could not compete with Apple and the iPod.

Google Maps Gets A Makeover

Yesterday when I pulled up Google Maps, a site I frequently visit, Ryan looked over and right away noticed that the interface was different. My response was, "it is?" I stared at the sight for a good minute trying to figure out what was different and finally Ryan pointed out the changes. Google did in fact give Maps a makeover, but our guess is that some of you won't even notice.

CyberNotes: Update Your Status on Twitter (and more) from Opera’s Address Bar

A few weeks ago we wrote about a Firefox extension that could post to Twitter right from the address bar, and it impressed me to say the least. One commenter, who goes by the name lilmoder, cleverly pointed out that you can do the same thing in Opera using its keyword search functionality.

XP for the OLPC is Ready to go!

It's hard to believe that Microsoft is still working on XP so many years after it originally launched. Their latest work with the operating system involved making a version that worked well with the XO Laptop (One Laptop Per Child project).

Snarl Brings Growl-Like Notifications to Windows

One of the things that I think all operating systems lack is a universal way for applications to display notifications. Yes, there are those pesky popup balloons on Windows, but using that to display notifications for things like new emails or messages is flat out wrong.

White Knight Two Will Take You to Space

If you have $200,000 in spare change lying around, you may want to consider saving it to use towards your trip to space. How will you get there you ask? The White Knight Two. It's the "mothership" made by Virgin Galactic and Scaled Composites and will be the launch vehicle that will fly SpaceShipTwo up to the Earth's atmosphere.
