It’s hard to believe that it has already been one year since TechSmith released their free Jing screencast and screenshot software. The project has been amazingly successful, and I can’t say that I’m really surprised by that. Jing is simple to use, free, and more often than not it offers everything people need… including free hosting!

They’ve done a few things to celebrate the event, such as releasing an updated version of the software that has some bug fixes. The really great news, however, is that they are increasing the free storage and bandwidth users get on Screencast.com. All Jing users get 2GB of storage (previously 200MB) and 2GB of bandwidth/transfer (previously 1GB). This means you can share even more screencasts!

Jing has won the hearts of many users, and I’m sure that it will continue to do so now that everyone gets ten times the amount of storage. The only downside that I’ve found to the software is that you can’t create screencasts longer than 5-minutes. They have their reasons for the limitation, but people would still like to see the restriction lifted. Although you might be hard-pressed to find someone who will watch a screencast over 5-minutes.

Congrats to Jing on having a successful first year, and I can’t wait to see what else they might have in store for us!

I’m guessing that it uses the default mic on your system. Have you tried switching the default mic to see if Jing would recognize it? This can be done in the audio properties in the Control Panel.
