Customizing Miranda

A little while ago one of my co-workers convinced me to give the Miranda instant messenger a try, and at first I was reluctant because I had heard how much customization was typically needed to get it just the way you wanted it. Over the years I had downloaded it to play around, but it has a rather overwhelming number of options that you can mess with.

Aero Glass in Windows XP… Done Right

UPDATE: As some commenters have pointed out certain antivirus applications are flagging this application as containing a trojan. My antivirus, NOD32, did not find any virus though. So it's up to you whether you want to proceed.

Integrated Gmail Transforms Your Inbox into a Website Hub

For the longest time I've been wanting Google to bring all of their services together into some sort of unified interface. A place where I could read my email, manage my calendar, catch up on news in my RSS feeds, search for a place on a map, and so on.

New Windows Live Movie Maker is Nice

Last week Microsoft released a new version of Windows Live Movie Maker that I have to admit is rather impressive. I took some time to play around with it over the weekend, and the Ribbon interface makes creating movies so easy that I actually feel like new computer users could grasp how to do it in a matter of minutes.

Backup Only Changed Portions of Files with DeltaCopy

I'll forewarn you that DeltaCopy is something you won't want to use for all of your backup needs because it's not the easiest thing in the world to set up. It is, however, useful if you're backing up large amounts of data every night that doesn't change very much.

YAPM: Process Manager with a Ribbon UI

Most computer power users probably open up the Windows task/process manager at least a few times each day. Maybe it's to close down an app that isn't responding, to see what's eating your system resources, or maybe even a bit more advanced like making sure you're aware of everything that's running on your PC.

Would You Still Recommend Digsby to Someone?

For a little while Digsby has been bundling software with their installer as a way for them to make money. They try to get users to install the third party apps, and in return they get a pretty good payout. This isn't anything new, and we've tried to point this out to our readers whenever we've written about Digsby.

Why the Industry is Dealing with Piracy the Wrong Way

As you probably know by now, the entertainment industry is still busy trying to sue The Pirate Bay out of existence. If they get what they want and The Pirate Bay closes down, their big piracy problem will not suddenly melt away. It may in fact continue to flourish, with or without The Pirate Bay.

Drive Manager: Hide Drives, Assign Drive Letters to Folders, and More

This free app will surely be a gem for any information-bearing geek out there. Not only is Drive Manager free, but it's also portable... that's a combination we don't see nearly enough.

Deleting Locked Files (32 and 64-bit)

It seems like on Windows I always come across those pesky files I can't delete because another process is using it. Up until a few months ago I had always used a program called Unlocker to get around this, and it has served me well. I had to stop using it, however, when I moved to Vista 64-bit since it only includes support for 32-bit versions of Windows.

OpenOffice with a Ribbon?

I was going back and forth whether I should write about this, but I wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were on this. I posted on Twitter a week ago about news of OpenOffice.org working on a ribbon-like design for an upcoming version of their office suite. When I saw the news on an official Sun blog I was rather disappointed, which is why I wasn't even going to mention it here on the site.

Welcome to the CyberNet Redesign

I told you earlier in the week that a redesign was coming today, and I wasn't lying. Hopefully when you see it for the first time you recognize how much we were pushing for simplicity.

CyberNet Redesign Coming This Sunday

Sunday is the big day! Over the last month or so I've been spending every ounce of free time I could scrounge up working on a site redesign. After all, this one has served us for two wonderful years. This time around I took a lot of things into consideration based on the feedback I've heard about our current theme.
