Change the Windows 7 Login Screen

After a little while it can be nice to freshen up the appearance of the things we use each day. I'm sure that many of us start off the morning with a Windows login prompt on the screen, and with a quick DLL replacement you can make that Windows 7 login screen look completely different than what ships with the stock OS.

JayCut: Free Online Video Editor

Video editing is something that can kind of be a pain, and in some cases can even cost a lot of money if you don't already have decent hardware/software to do it. JayCut wants to help with both of those things. A free account will get you 2GB of storage and the ability to export/save up to 20 videos per month. I'd say that is more than sufficient for most people.

Moof Imports and Plays Your iTunes Library Online, Kind of

There are a lot of online services popping up that help you get fast access to your favorite tunes without having to drop a dime. One of my favorites is definitely Grooveshark, but there are a plenty of other alternatives out there. The one I'm going to talk about today is called Moof.

ColorSuckr: Create Color Schemes from Photos

Developing color schemes can be difficult at times, but with an online service like ColorSuckr you can provide it with an image to have it pull out the top 12 colors. It has a range of features to make generating the color schemes from any image extremely easy.

Synchronicity Makes File/Folder Backups Simple

We've covered all kinds of backup utilities on the site, but the one covered in this article is hands-down one of my favorites. Synchronicity is free, open source, and available in a portable format. After you fire it up the first time you'll probably be shocked that something laid out this nicely only uses 215KB on your hard drive... I know I was.

Using VBScript to Send Emails with Gmail

I normally don't post scripts and batch files that I use, but I wanted to share this particular script because I use it all the time. VBScript files are nice because typically they are simply coded, and work across virtually all Windows-powered machines. You just have to throw the code in a .VBS file, and from there it can be executed in your batch files very easily.

Use Altdrag to Move Off-Screen Windows

One of the annoyances that has been in Windows for awhile is the after-affects that can occur after you disconnect a second monitor. Many times the windows that are off-screen will become "unreachable," and moving them back to the primary monitor can be difficult. Most apps even try to remember their last-used position, which means restarting the program doesn't even fix the problem.

View Details on Windows Startup Programs

A lot of great utilities have come out of Sysinternals, such as Process Explorer, and Autoruns is definitely among the top of the list. It's extremely useful for anyone that deals with bogged down systems on a regular basis. It will essentially lay out all of the items that start up with Windows, and goes way beyond the things you'll find in the built-in msconfig tool.

Host Your Own Download/Upload Speed Test

I use Speedtest.net quite a bit to help determine how well my Internet service is performing. Something I didn't realize until recently was that they actually have a "mini" version of the online service available for those of you who want to host some basic tests on your own servers for free.

Solipskier Brings Skiing to Your Browser, iPhone, and iPad

We don't write about iPhone games on the site too often, but this one hits a bit closer to home than most others in the App Store. This one was put together by a very talented group of game developers I know, and they've come up with something that's both fun and addicting.

Google Apps and Gmail Notifier for Multiple Accounts

I've tried all kinds of Gmail notifiers in the past, and many of them leave something to be desired. I have to admit that one of the more recent ones, Spiffy, is on the verge of being awesome. Spiffy is simple, and that is partially because it is available in a portable form. The rest of the simplicity comes from being able to configure up to 5 Gmail accounts in a few minutes.

Use ImgBurn to Change Book Type (Bitsetting) to DVD-ROM

The book type setting is something I haven't had to worry about much, but that is largely because I don't burn DVD's very much anymore. The last time I did have to burn one, however, it was a DVD+R DL (dual layer) that didn't want to work in the particular DVD player that I was trying it in.

Advanced File Renamer

The list of batch file renamers that we've covered is about to grow by one thanks to Advanced Renamer. So many of these apps accomplish the same kind of thing, but they all do it in a different fashion. We try to cover the best bulk file renamers so that you can choose for yourself which suits your needs.

Use Portable TreeSize to Find Large Files and Folders

There have been a lot of disk space analyzers floating around lately that help you identify space-hogging files and folders on your hard drive. Disk Space Fan has a pretty interface, WinDirStat is a classic favorite, and there are all kinds of other ones available that accomplish the same kind of task.

Easily Calculate MD5 or SHA1 Hashes

Last week we wrote about how you can use hashes to scan files for viruses using VirusTotal, and referenced a few ways to grab the hashes on both Windows and Mac. One of the recent additions to my portable catalog is a hash calculator called HashMyFiles put out by Nirsoft, who makes a lot of great freeware utilities.

Simplest “Minimize to Tray” Solution

I love the convenience of being able to minimize apps to the System Tray... especially when you're using an OS other than Windows 7, which means each Taskbar icon takes up a significant amount of room. In the past we've written about some great tools such as DM2 and TrayDevil that let you minimize a window to the System Tray, but they are often bundled with a lot of other features.
