I spend quite a bit of time living in the terminal on my Mac, and so I was rightfully excited when I came across the free app called iTerm 2 that squashes some of the things I wanted the built-in app to offer. One of the things I really needed was a search feature to quickly find things from past commands I've run, and iTerm 2 does that very well.

In Windows there is an option to safely eject a drive from the machine, but it's not always successful nor is it very thorough. The free and portable ProEject tool tries to take it a step further by cleaning up all possible traces of the drive to make sure it isn't being used anymore.

When using an Apple keyboard with your Mac the function keys take on alternate purposes. For example, if you press the F8 key it will play/pause your music instead of sending the F8 signal to the application you're using. There may be some of those function keys you'd prefer to act like the F1-12 that they do on other keyboards instead of the special functions that Apple assigns to them.
Whenever you copy and paste something you are probably doing so with the intent of transporting that snippet of text or image somewhere else. Maybe you're copying it into a Word document, saving it in Evernote, performing a Google search, mapping an address, or one of the many other possibilities.
I know a lot of people who stick with their webmail interface because it's simple and does everything they need it to do. The nice thing about Inbox2 is that it may be a desktop mail client, but it tries to aggregate mail from all of your different accounts as well as your social networks.
A lot of programmers I know prefer to use a simple text editor when programming rather than a full-featured development suite. If you're one of those people I highly recommend that you try the very polished Intype text editor. It is easily one of the best programmer-focused text editors I have ever used, but you may be disappointed to hear that it is only free until version 1.0 is released.

Google's auto-complete feature tries to predict what you want to search for by looking at popular search terms for your area. I decided to make a list of the most popular search terms in the United States, which I was able to accomplish by manually setting my location to the United States rather than my specific city.
If you frequently switch between using a mouse and a touchpad you might run into an issue where the sensitivities/speed of the cursor between the two devices doesn't line up quite right.
There are several sites out there that can track price drops on Amazon, but Chintzee has some nice features that make it stand out from the others. For starters you can set up everything without needing to create an account.
There are a lot of screenshot extensions for Google Chrome, and many include excellent annotation capabilities. For some users all of those features might be overkill, and that is where Blipshot comes into play. This is a one-click screenshot utility that works exactly how you'd expect it to.

If you've been having problems with your computer you may be contemplating using the built-in Windows System Restore utility, but what if you could browse the backed up files instead and just grab the ones you need? That's the exact purpose of the free System Restore Explorer that works on Windows Vista and Windows 7.
There are times where you might want to change content on a site, but doing so with Chrome's built-in web developer tools can sometimes be a pain. With the Live Page Editor Chrome extension, however, all that changes because you can directly edit content on a site without having to dig through the source code of a page.
I've seen some websites before that try to rollup multiple utilities under a single domain, but the tools they provide are normally the things like a tip calculator that you don't need to use very often. The 1DL.US site is different because they have a wide variety of very useful tools that all become just a click away.
There is a free app in the Mac App Store called FreeSpace Tab (iTunes page link) that is pretty slick for anyone that needs to monitor how much space is left on their system or constantly eject drives. Once installed there will be an icon in your Menu Bar, and when clicked shows everything that is mounted on your system.

We covered a log file viewer awhile back that served as an excellent way to open extremely large files. There's another app called Glogg that I found recently though that also does a greg job of handling large files, and comes equipped with some really nice features.
There aren't a lot of free WYSIWYG editors out, and the ones that are available normally have terrible interfaces with limited functionality. I'm not a huge fan of WYSIWYG editors myself, but they can serve as a good starting point if you're just learning how to code HTML.
