You DO NOT need to use sudo. WOP will install to your users home directory. Hmm must’ve been an Ubuntuer that posted that. Some of the worst advice in the world comes from Ubuntuers.
chmod +x worldofpadman.run
./worldofpadman.run

That’s it!

You don’t have to compile World Of Padman. It comes in a .run file, you just have to run

$ sudo sh ./WorldofPadman.run (or whatever its actual name is)

to launch the installer, and install it. run it with sudo because it will want to install symlinks to /usr/local/bin (if memory serves) and menu items for KDE/GNOME. If you have a functional sound system and GL working, it should work fine at that point, though you may need to launch the program with: ‘+set s_driver alsa +set s_numberOfSpeakers 2′ or somesuch.

Wine will let you play some games in Linux, but certainly not all of them.

Thanks for the information. I'm going to try World of Padman as soon as possible. Too bad it is not available from the Ubuntu repositories. Compiling stuff scares some people away.
