Some of you may remember about a year ago at this time (April 23rd to be exact), we experienced our very first hard drive crash on our server. At the time we had hoped it would be the last time we needed to put our trusty back-ups to good use, but unfortunately, as luck would have it, it wasn’t. Early this morning we experienced hard drive failure and so our host had to set us up with a new server. While we were at it, we upgraded from Fedora 5 to Fedora 7.

Thanks for your patience and for the emails! We’re still working on a few things (like the Forum and Learn Firefox), but everything should be back to normal within the next few hours. Once again, we can tell you first hand how important it is for you to backup your hard drive if you’d be panicking if it crashed. Next year about this time we’ll be holding our breath and hoping we don’t have to go through this, yet again!

  1. I though it was shorter time then 1 year since the last hard drive. How time flies :|

  2. I’m so glad you’re back. I was wondering what in the hell is happening? I’m seriously thinking in finally backing up my hard disk. Been kinda lazy in doing so.

  3. Whew… I didn’t know what I was going to do on a day without CyberNet!

Time sure does fly, doesn’t it! Just a couple of weeks ago Ryan and I were talking about what a nightmare it was the last time this happened. Our host had a limited staff for the weekend (it happened Sunday into Monday) and so it took them forever to get us a new server up and running, and then on Monday once they finally did get it back up, Ryan was in the middle of completing his Senior Project at school with a group of people. It was crazy trying to get everything restored!

Not a bad idea to back-up Omar, you just never know. :) In the last year we’ve had three hard drives fail and one hard drive that was in the process of failing.

    Thanks so much, Nimrodguy! :)

  5. Welcome back! Hope you have more trustworthy harddrives this time :)

  6. Thanks for the positive comments guys… it’s always nice ot read those after a day like today. The command line and myself became a little too acquainted.

  7. Why not use a RAID configuration?

Well, we’ve pondered doing that, but I can’t say I really expected having the hard drive crash so frequently. Our host charges another $25 or so a month to have an additional hard drive, and right now we’re trying to keep costs to a minimum while we see whether we’re going to keep doing the site fulltime.
