We may soon be able to say farewell to AIM Triton. AOL is letting users test AIM 6.0 Beta which is going to replace AIM Triton so that there is only one version available to users.
Don’t let the super small download fool you because it is just for a downloader which will go and retrieve the necessary installation files. It did take longer than I expected to download the installation files so they must be quite large, but after that finished it was a cinch to setup.
After I got it up and running I didn’t really find anything that was amazing. It is hard for me to compare it to previous versions because I haven’t installed AIM in years. In fact I had to create an account just to install it! I’ve been using Google Talk ever since it was released and I don’t think I’ll be switching to anything else.
If you are running Windows Vista then you should checkout these installation instructions. They run you through what you need to do to get AIM 6.0 Beta up and running on any version of Vista after build 5384 (which was Vista Beta 2). They are, however, careful to warn people that the uninstaller does not work properly in Vista so you should make sure that you want this installed.
Here is a screenshot from the settings:

Ddi you find any adware/spyware? Did it install AOL explorer or force you to register with another company with your account?
Does this installer require you to install AOL Browser (or AOL Explorer- whatever it’s called?).
That’s the only reason I don’t use Triton. It forces the browser to be installed and I don’t want extra software from AOL on my computer. AIM Pro is actually pretty good because it doesn’t force you to install AOL’s standalone browser, but for now I’ve been sticking to AIM 5.xx.
Nope, the install was pretty clean and I didn’t have to install anything else. I was pretty surprised as well but it looks like they are trying to go a little more “professional”.
Ive been using it for a few minutes and i love it so far.
I tried Triton a while ago and didnt like it. It just felt too different from aim 5.9. But 6.0 still feels like 5.9 and its go a new look which is good
I just started using it, but there’s still an option for the “plaxo” place in the address book section (apparently, it’s an online address book).
Other than that, I’m pleased and I would expect that if it hits soon, AIM might take the lead again. The reason why I don’t use GTalk or MSN is because everyone I know is on AIM.
Why is the installer called triton_full_install_1.3.30.1 if it’s not Triton anymore?
And will this install overwrite my current AIM install (I have AIM 5.xx)?
I’m not sure why the installer is called that but I didn’t even realize it. I wouldn’t think that it would overwrite your AIM 5.xx but I didn’t have that version installed when I tested this.
