I bought the last 60 gig PS3 I could find in a target in December, passing on the 80 gig w/10 free blue rays from WalMart. The 60 gig model is the only one with true PS2 backward compatibility (aside from the long gone 20gig model. The 60 gig uses hardware, an actual PS2 Emotion engine to play PS2 games where the 80 gig model uses software and only plays a little over half of the SP2 titles well.

Huh, I never knew that both models used different methods for backwards compatibility. I learn something new everyday.

Yes, I do believe they were using that as a big selling point when the system launched. And now it's the Xbox 360 that has a large number of backwards compatible games while the PS3 is backing out.

Hopefully the 80GB is only gonna disappear from Bestbuy because unless they are coming out with a 120 or 160GB its a really dumb move. I know they want to make things more affordable for better sales, but people want the extra gigs, and backward compatibility is an issue, even though pretty soon most people will not play ps2 games

There won’t be backwards compatibility as Sony has improved their manufacturing process: cutting their costs and improving their profits but the new models are not ps2 compatible. so probably these are being rolled out?

I’m sure Sony will still produce the 80GB though, because they have to offer something with backwards compatibility… right?

The 60GB model, which I have, also supports backwards compatibility. But the 60GB version has long been gone from store shelves. Maybe there are still units on eBay.
