bungie Bungie Studios is best known for creating the Halo series for Xbox which has turned into one of the best-selling games of all time. After all, Halo 3 managed to bring in $170 Million in the first 24 hours of sales! Halo hasn’t been the only thing to come out of Bungie though. Prior to their Halo days and before they were acquired by Microsoft back in 2000, they focused on creating games for the Macintosh computer. They did alright considering people usually don’t buy a Mac to play games, but they certainly weren’t known back then like they are now. Microsoft has been good for them, but they’ve been good for Microsoft as well.

After all of their success under Microsoft’s ownership, it appears as though they may eventually be headed back to making games for Apple computers if the unconfirmed rumor over at DailyTech is true. The article states that Microsoft has agreed to let go of Bungie Studios but has retained the rights to Halo. Apparently the separation occurred on October 1st, but both sides have been quiet about it while they wait for the quarterly financial report to get released. While it may be hard to believe that Bungie would leave Microsoft, GameInformer says that their source at Bungie said that they’re “tired of making Halo, and didn’t want to do future Halo games.”

To become their own studio, it’s reported that Bungie Shareholders had to fork out a “significant” amount of money to purchase the studio back from Microsoft.  While they may be their own studio once again, Microsoft has “the right of first refusal on future games.” That means that there still could be other games exclusive only to the Xbox that are created by Bungie.

This is definitely an interesting turn of events, especially because it comes so soon after Halo 3’s launch. Microsoft hasn’t confirmed nor denied it which leads me to believe that this is true. Of course only time will tell…
