Fast Image Viewer for Windows

Windows only I remember testing out the ImageGlass photo viewer last year and was impressed with the speed at which it could shuffle through photos, but I wasn't very fond of the interface. When I recently checked back in on the project I noticed that a technical preview of ImageGlass 1.5 was available, and it is looking pretty good.

Wrap Around the Mouse Both Horizontally and Vertically

Windows only We've covered some apps that will wrap around your mouse when it reaches the left or right side of the screen, but Mousinity is one of the first we've seen to do all four sides of the screen. That means it can jump from the left and right sides, but also from the top and bottom.

Organize Files on a PC by Name, Date, Type, and More

Windows only Sometimes a folder can get overwhelmingly unorganized, and trying to sort it out manually would take forever. That's where a program like Folder Axe is handy. You can throw a huge directory of files and folders at it, and then choose how it should sort the files. It will then organize them into directories or ZIP them up for easy archival based on the parameters you specify.

Archive a Site on a Mac

Mac only Last year we wrote about a free Windows and Linux tool called HTTrack that will let you create an offline archive/copy of a website. Unfortunately the app wasn't available for Mac users, but there is a great alternative called SiteSucker that does pretty much the same thing and has a much nicer interface.

Monitor Registry Changes in Windows

Windows only I'm sure you've come across a situation where you've wanted to track the changes that have been made to the Windows Registry because it can be nice to know the changes a program is making. That is where an app like Regshot comes in to play.

Automatically Restart Crashed or Closed Programs

Windows only If you have a program that you want to ensure is always running the free ReStartMe app may be a necessity for you. All you have to do is give it a list of processes to monitor, and if one of those processes are ever caught not running it will immediately start up the app again.

Terminal Alternative for Mac

Mac only I spend quite a bit of time living in the terminal on my Mac, and so I was rightfully excited when I came across the free app called iTerm 2 that squashes some of the things I wanted the built-in app to offer. One of the things I really needed was a search feature to quickly find things from past commands I've run, and iTerm 2 does that very well.

Safely Eject Drives in Windows

Windows only In Windows there is an option to safely eject a drive from the machine, but it's not always successful nor is it very thorough. The free and portable ProEject tool tries to take it a step further by cleaning up all possible traces of the drive to make sure it isn't being used anymore.

Toggle Individual Function Key Actions on a Mac

Mac only When using an Apple keyboard with your Mac the function keys take on alternate purposes. For example, if you press the F8 key it will play/pause your music instead of sending the F8 signal to the application you're using.

Perform Actions on the Text/Images You Copy

Windows; Mac Whenever you copy and paste something you are probably doing so with the intent of transporting that snippet of text or image somewhere else. Maybe you're copying it into a Word document, saving it in Evernote, performing a Google search, mapping an address, or one of the many other possibilities.

Inbox2 Brings Your Mail and Social Networks Together

Windows only I know a lot of people who stick with their webmail interface because it's simple and does everything they need it to do. The nice thing about Inbox2 is that it may be a desktop mail client, but it tries to aggregate mail from all of your different accounts as well as your social networks.

Intype: Text Editor for Programmers

Windows only A lot of programmers I know prefer to use a simple text editor when programming rather than a full-featured development suite. If you're one of those people I highly recommend that you try the very polished Intype text editor.

Quickly Snap Full Page Screenshots in Chrome

There are a lot of screenshot extensions for Google Chrome, and many include excellent annotation capabilities. For some users all of those features might be overkill, and that is where Blipshot comes into play. This is a one-click screenshot utility that works exactly how you'd expect it to.

Browse Windows System Restore Points

Windows only If you've been having problems with your computer you may be contemplating using the built-in Windows System Restore utility, but what if you could browse the backed up files instead and just grab the ones you need? That's the exact purpose of the free System Restore Explorer that works on Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Quickly Edit Any Content on a Website

There are times where you might want to change content on a site, but doing so with Chrome's built-in web developer tools can sometimes be a pain. With the Live Page Editor Chrome extension, however, all that changes because you can directly edit content on a site without having to dig through the source code of a page.

View Free Space and Eject Drives from the Mac Menu Bar

Mac only There is a free app in the Mac App Store called FreeSpace Tab (iTunes page link) that is pretty slick for anyone that needs to monitor how much space is left on their system or constantly eject drives. Once installed there will be an icon in your Menu Bar, and when clicked shows everything that is mounted on your system.

Free Log File Viewer for Windows/Linux

Windows;  Linux We covered a log file viewer awhile back that served as an excellent way to open extremely large files. There's another app called Glogg that I found recently though that also does a greg job of handling large files, and comes equipped with some really nice features.

Free Office-Style WYSIWYG HTML Editor

Windows only There aren't a lot of free WYSIWYG editors out, and the ones that are available normally have terrible interfaces with limited functionality. I'm not a huge fan of WYSIWYG editors myself, but they can serve as a good starting point if you're just learning how to code HTML.
