The registry cleaner can definitely be risky, and a year or so ago it deleted an entry from the registry that majorly messed up Windows Media Center for me. Luckily I made a backup and was able to restore that registry entry.

I like CCleaner and have been using it off and on for a few years, but there are a few issues with it that have always affected my OS - which is Win98SE, so that may have something to do with the issues.

I cannot use the registry cleaner because it will repeatedly:

1. Change my default system font to Tahoma and I have to manually reset it back to Sans Serif.

2. After cleaning, when I manually re-boot (to delete the index.dat files), after the boot-up process has finished, there are still files in my Recycle Bin.

Again, both of these issues may have something to do with my older OS, but other than those two consistent problems, this is a very good program for cleaning crap. Sadly, I can no longer clean my registry with it and have been using RegCleaner and Wise Registry Cleaner.

BACK UP REGISTRY BEFORE CLEANING!!!!!

CCleaner has a real problem with Visual Studio. When cleaning the registry it removed a couple of keys that it shouldn't have. VS would not repair or uninstall. I had to reinstall windows to get Visual Studio back up.

My most recent problem is with Adobe Reader 8.0. I can't run the program, uninstall it, or install the latest update.

So I say again, BACK UP REGISTRY BEFORE CLEANING!!!!!

My favorite use of CCleaner is for the registry. I always back it up before it makes any changes, but so far it hasn't screwed anything up. It's amazing to see all the stuff apps leave behind when you uninstall them.

I have been using CCleaner for sometime now and it is very good tool. I run it once a month and I am surprised to see how much thing it cleans off the my system.

Yes crap cleaner is is an excellent piece of software. But i run this alongside Easy cleaner. Somehow the latter always finds junk files even after i have run CCleaner. Other than that a brilliant application. But I think easycleaner also deserves a mention as it is also free and provides similar functionality. In fact it has more features.
