If they all used XMPP then it would be easy. As it is those using GTalk will eventually benefit the most, seeing as it uses XMPP which can take advantages of transports.

I also have no AIM contacts but will try and find some to test it in GTalk. The fact that you have to log in with your AIM user name definitely suggests the use of a transport as opposed to direct collaboration between the services to link their systems.

Then they’d have the 3 big services. I thought it was kinda strange that you log in using your AIM logon and passord. Rather than the two services being inter-compatible, they basically made it so you could run AIM within Gmail. In Y!Mail IM or desktop IM, you IM WinLive users w/ your Y! account, no WinLive account necessary. It’s the same from WinLive.</blockquote></div>
I thought it was a little weird the way that they implemented it as well. This kind of shot down some of the hope I had with them implementing other services.

Unfortunately I don't have any friends using AIM where I could try this out, but I do believe it is compliant with Gmail only. In the official post they even say that you must "log in to AIM through Gmail chat" so I don't think it will work in Google Talk.

Since you say that this feature isn't included in GTalk I'm guessing that the system doesn't actually use a Jabber transport - that they've just signed a deal with AOL and allowed the services to connect. If it does use a transport then you should be able to talk to AIM contacts from GTalk once you've registered your AIM details with GMail (and therefore their transport server).
