The main reason I’ve stuck with Miranda for some many years is mostly due to the high level of customization allowed. Seems to be the closest I can get to complete control without actually rolling out my own IM application.

See, I wasn’t that guy though. I didn’t care about configuring every little aspect, but I fell in love when I dove in and saw a few of the features (especially color-coding the contacts according to their status). The exceptional performance was just icing on the cake.

Before jumping to Miranda all my messengers used popup notifications, but the “quietness” of not having the popups is kind of nice. After all, I already receive dozens of popups every day from Outlook so I don’t want to have even more.

I use without plug-ins, I only add some sounds after installation so I don’t miss any received message. Also i like it that it uses a native look so it blends with any theme. Is a really good program.

Miranda is great if you’re the kind of guy that wants to configure everything the way you want it, but I just want my IM client to work and be shiny out of the box. That’s why I use Windows Live Messenger or, when I’m worried about my system performance, Pidgin.

Yes Tom It supports multiple accounts for any of the protocols that it supports and there are many protocols that have been and can be developed that don’t come with the core package (Twitter, Facebook (in alpha) MySpace, Tlen, OpenFire, weather, RSS and many many more)

Until I found the Weather Watcher program that’s fairly lightweight but gives me every last bit of weather data out there, my favorite addon was the weather “protocol” . It’s a customizable weather updater that saves a few resources by being an add-on for a program you’re running anyway. And I’m not alone apparently – according to Miranda’s add-ons page, it was the 3rd-most-downloaded add-on last week.

The only other must-have I would add to the ones mentioned above is Popup Plus. Not only do you get prettier, themable popup notifications – you get lots of options for tweaking those popups.
